The European Carry-All

A form of Insistent Terminology in which a character refers to a particular object using a less embarrassing name.

Name Space:
Main
Page Type:
Trope
Sent over from Trope Repair Shop Conversations. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to copy the entire page, which currently exists at The European Carry-All, so for now I'll just summarize and it can be copied over later if needed.

It's believed that the trope is not thriving - not enough in-bounds and not enough examples.

Proposed solutions:

- Rename the trope; it's felt that the current name would be recognizable only to Seinfeld fans (though the basic phrasing does crop up in a number of other works) Perhaps Less Embarrassing Name? (Someone in the repair shop discussion suggested Manly Purse Effect.) - Find and add more examples, both on the page and entry pimp them on the relevant works - Scrap the trope entirely and move all examples to Insistent Terminology, as this is really just a form of that anyway

Anyone? I've been working on entry-pimping it and adding examples, since that seems to be the one thing I can do to help, but given that this was sent from Trope Repair, it would be kinda nice if we had an actual discussion.

The name is very obscure and non-descriptive indeed, I've just had to go and read the meaning in the trope page to understand one of the recently crosswicked examples. Unmanly Disguissed By Euphemism

Don't move to Insistent Terminology. That's like Sgt Angel reciting the new Police Terminology Handbook at you.

Often used in humour? So, when Bob give something a Less Embarrassing Name because otherwise Bob would get all hot and bothered. Alice, though, isn't phased in the least and mutters "You mean (actual name, that Bob is too embarrassed to say)" and Bob goes bright red anyway.

Less Embarrassing Name could mean people though (Gaylord Focker calling himself 'Greg' is a wonderful example of that) so you'd have to find a name to say it's not that. How about Not Calling It Embarrassment.

    Oh dear, that's terrible.

Hmm... hmm... if Less Embarrassing Name is problematic, then how about Less Embarrassing Term?

Less Embarrassing Term is good, though I did get ''The European Carry All', probably because I'm European and have heard most stereotypes going.

Still, 'What Cap Would Call It' just came to mind. I wouldn't advise using that as firstly it references Captain America and the fact he's still quaint and blushes at half of all Tony Stark says. I can see that boy getting embarrassed at saying whatever less embarrassing term he comes up with. (The same cannot be said for Chris Evans' other Marvel character, Johnny Storm.) And secondly, people still might not get it.

That second one is funny, but yeah, that's just as obscure as "The European Carry All," if not more so. Well, if nobody has any strong objection, then perhaps we'll go with Less Embarrassing Term? Let's give it a couple days and see if anyone has any objection, and if not, we can go with that.
