Hilariously Horrendous

Something initially Played For Laughs turns out to have a not so funny origin.

Say Bob has a problem. Alice,Carl, and...Matt make fun of him for it. Later in the story, it turns out Bob's problem is because of some horrible trauma as a kid or maybe a war and, of course, everyone is horrified and guilty.

Pretty sure this is Cerebus Retcon, but no one would blame you for not realizing that.

I can think of a couple of examples. In one episode of How I met your Mother, Ted and Barney contemplate joining in a fight with a psychotic barman at Mc Laren's bar, and Marshall chastises them for considering it, citing his experience of fighting with his brothers as a teenager. The other characters mock him for these 'playfights', but at the end of the episode it is revealed his experience was less pillow fight, and more fight club - although not really 'horrendous', make what you will. The other is from Catch-22, in which Cpt 'Aarfy'Aardvark constantly brags about having never paid for sex, but is later revealed that this is because he forces himself upon and often rapes women.

@abk0100 Damn...I think you might be right. Ah, well. I'll add the examples to the page.
