Genocide Tropes

Tropes relating to the intentional extermination of entire groups down to the last individual.

Name Space:
Main
Page Type:
Trope
One side attempts to kill (almost) everyone on the opposite one based on their background. Most of these can be described as genocide, or sometimes even omnicide in more speculative works.

Motivations vary, but they most commonly tend to be employed by either xenophobic racists, fantastic or otherwise, or by the heroes against groups of beings who are all pure evil. The former will often signify a crossing of the Moral Event Horizon, the latter makes the protagonists morally grey Pragmatic Heroes depending on how the work handles the implications of such an extreme action.

Would this also encompass the extermination of non-sentient pests, like Real Life efforts to wipe out smallpox and rinderpest? If not, you may need to re-title it Genocide Tropes.

A Dalek is going to end up on this page somewhere, I just know it.

@ SharleeD: I conceived the indexed tropes as encompassing the intentional exterminations of sentient species, so that title might indeed be better-fitting. I chose the initial title more because of uncertainty of whether total omnicide qualifies as well.

@ ShanghaiSlave: Not unless it necessarily entails destroying the enemy race altogether, which doesn't seem to be a requirement for Creature Defense Force.

@ Arbiter099: Dalek's are already under Absolute Xenophobe, and probably quite a few of the other tropes on the list.

^^^ No, that's more about a fictional race just being evil in general. This has to be either about the action itself or villains that have this as their motive.

^ I mean, a race being ACE is a good reason for their whole extermination - genocide, as it is.

    Would The Purge count?

My one and only nit-pick is that the goal of a genocide needn't always be to destroy an entire race down to the last individual, as it can be defined as an attempt to destroy a race "in whole or in part".

^ Where did you get that definition from? That sounds... rather wrong.

    ^ From The Other Wiki:

Genocide is the systematic destruction of all or part of a racial, ethnic, religious or national group [...] Genocide entails also the Conspiracy to commit genocide; Direct and public incitement to commit genocide; Attempt to commit genocide; and Complicity in genocide. What constitutes enough of a "part" to qualify as genocide has been subject to much debate by legal scholars.

^ I've amended the opening paragraph to account for this.

^^^^ Only in some circumstances. Mass killings on the basis of political leanings has never really fallen under the definition of genocide. The page does list some cases where they overlap, so I've added it to the list.

    Also added Evilutionary Biologist.

    ^ Added.

^^ I don't see the relation. That seems to be just "scary soldiers", not "soldiers that kill literally everyone".

^The original laconic was "death squads used as front line troops"- but if the trope is broader than that, then never mind.

^ As with Doom Troops, those tropes seem to be broader than that. Earth Shattering Kaboom I can kinda see, but only if it's something like an alien race trying to wipe out humanity. Let's try to keep this index restricted to intentional destruction to prevent overlap with the Apocalyptic Index.

Beyond that, I think we've pretty much covered our bases. Hats?
