* CommonKnowledge: Because the arcade version (and ports based on it) marked his status as one of the most iconic video game characters, it is often thought of as Luigi's debut, with his trophies in ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosMelee'', ''[[VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosBrawl Brawl]]'' and ''[[VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosForNintendo3DSAndWiiU 3DS and Wii U]]'' even referring to it as such. In reality, Luigi's first appearance was in the [[InNameOnly much different]] ''VideoGame/GameAndWatch'' version of the game.
* DemonicSpiders: The green fireballs, which spawned not from the pipes, but ''directly on your current floor''.
* FanNickname: Keeping with the theme of Luigi being a green Mario, the yellow and blue Marios in the GBA version are usually referred to as Wario and Waluigi respectively.
* HilariousInHindsight:
** [[https://youtu.be/dduvx-dEySY The Atari commercial]] characterized Luigi as a coward long before ''VideoGame/LuigisMansion'' or even ''WesternAnimation/TheSuperMarioBrosSuperShow'' did.
** The blue Mario who serves as Player 4 in the GBA Battle Mode [[WebAnimation/Supermarioglitchy4sSuperMario64Bloopers might look familiar]] to some people.
* GoodBadBugs: The NES version has a glitch where pausing the game right as Mario is about to hit a floor from underneath it will cause him to jump right through it.
* ItsTheSameNowItSucks: The game being released ''[[PortOverdosed seven times]]'' on the GBA (the remake five times and the NES port twice). IGN in particular first praised the remake in their ''Super Mario Advance'' review, but increasingly got annoyed by its presence per subsequent release (even speaking to Nintendo in search for a reason) until becoming indifferent about it in their ''Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga'' review.
* MemeticMutation: "Mario, where are you?!" from the Atari commercial.
* OlderThanTheyThink:
** Luigi being the CowardlySidekick did not come from ''VideoGame/LuigisMansion'' or ''Series/TheSuperMarioBrosSuperShow''. It came from the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnU-2HRJNO4 Atari commercial]] for ''Mario Bros''.
** The NES port is the first to give Mario his modern color scheme (with a red hat and shirt and blue overalls), but Nintendo would not make this his official look until ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros3''.
* PolishedPort:
** ''Kaettekita Mario Bros.'' improves the controls, restores the arcades graphics, and adds back the Icicles. The European-only ''Classic Serie'' version retains all of this while removing the advertisements.
** The GBA remake has ''much'' better controls than the original arcade game, has ''[[VideoGame/SuperMarioAllStars All-Stars]]''-style graphics, a beefed up soundtrack to spice things up, and voice acting (when single-player). On top of that, it can support up to a whopping four players at once!
* SequelDisplacement: ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros1'' is a lot more famous. So much so, that most (though not all) later games kept the "Super" part of the name [[ArtifactTitle which resulted in displacing the original meaning]].[[note]]First there was ''Mario Bros.'', then there was ''"Super" Mario Bros.''[[/note]] That having been said, Nintendo still shows this game a lot of love, having remade it multiple times (most notably as part of the ''[[VideoGameRemake Super Mario Advance]]'' series and ''VideoGame/MarioAndLuigiSuperstarSaga'') and even making it a stage in ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosBrawl'' and ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosUltimate''.
* SuspiciouslySimilarSong: Listen to the bassline in the revamped soundtrack for the GBA remake, and you may find it sounds similar to the guitar hook in [[Music/TheWhiteAlbum "Birthday"]] by Music/TheBeatles.
