** The second half of Season 3 is when the series started getting darker, since that's when [[KnightOfCerebus Melvin]] gets introduced and we're shown [[DarkAndTroubledPast how Marik became evil]].

* DarkerAndEdgier:
** Season 3 is a tad darker then the previous seasons, with the villains being a lot more threatening (albeit they're still [[LaughablyEvil very comedic]] to a degree) and the plot becoming much deeper. Even the humor [[BlackComedy got relatively dark]] (though most of it comes from [[AxCrazy Melvin]]).
** The second half of Season Two is also pretty dark, when [[KnightOfCerebus Melvin]] gets introduced and we're shown [[DarkAndTroubledPast how Marik became evil]].
** Season 4 qualifies, partly due to the source material itself getting DarkerAndEdgier at this point, resulting in the abridged series [[PlayedForDrama taking itself seriously more frequently]], and partly due to the AffectionateParody nature of the series feeling less affectionate and more mean-spirited in this season. This applies to both the original series (Plenty of jokes are variants on "[[SeasonalRot Season 4 sucks]] [[WhoWritesThisCrap and is dumb]]") and YGOTAS itself (Numerous old jokes and characterizations, many going all the way back to Season 1, are RunningGagged, while the show acts as if none of them were ever funny in the first place.) Maybe LK is under the effects of the Seal of Orichalcos?[[note]]He has openly admitted to dealing with depression while producing this season, so that may not be too far off.[[/note]]
