Removing Word Cruft. The example about chapter 9 contradicts itself (Breather Level and That One Level are mutually exclusive).

** "Chapter 7: The Battle at Barious" is often looked upon as this as it's easy to get killed if you don't know what's going to happen. That's when the game suddenly jumps up from its seat and shoves a difficulty spike down your throat. \\
For those wondering, you have to take down a giant tank which is only vulnerable at specific turns, not to mention it having anti-personnel turrets all over it to destroy anybody that tries to get close, plus two powerful, invincible anti-tank turrets that can break walls just as easily as a tank. The only way to defeat the anti-personnel turrets is to pop them off with Lancer fire, which is fairly inaccurate (and ammo-limited without Engineers to resupply) this early in the game. The fastest way to destroy the radiators is not to bring a Lancer up there and use all three shots, but a rather simple solution that's not particularly obvious, save for the shape of the radiators. To top it all off, once you get close to beating him, Selvaria shows up for the first time to aid him. [[NighInvulnerability She cannot be harmed]] and if she targets any of your infantry, they are as good as dead. Better yet, she also comes in with a force of powerful soldiers (including the stage's Ace) who ''will'' run around and clean up if you're out of position.
** "Chapter 9: [[spoiler:Kidnapping of Cordelia]]." You have to block an APC and shoot it down with bullets alone, no explosives [[spoiler:as that would harm the princess]]. The city streets don't leave much room to maneuver, though, and if you're not careful, the APC can easily gun down one of your soldiers and then [[DeaderThanDead run them over.]] If you don't take the game-provided hint of blocking the first few streets, the APC can easily outpace your non-Scout troops. Alternatively, see BreatherLevel. The small number of units makes Orders disproportionately strong (notably, the Lancer-unlockable ones that increase vehicle damage). For a little perspective on just how bad missions 7 and 9 can be, Welkin's first audience with Cordelia comes after this mission when she gives him his first medal, a Gallian Medal of Honor. In the PS4 release is the first opportunity for a player to receive an achievement, and ''less than 30%'' of ''Valkyria Chronicles'' players on that platform have that first achievement as of Dec. 2021.

Taking care of ZCEs. The final boss cannot be an example of this trope unless its difficulty is notorious, which is not the case here.

* SpiritualLicensee: The series is one to the ''VideoGame/SakuraWars'' games. Helped in part be the developers having worked on the previous series.

* SpiritualLicensee: The series gameplay is one to based on ''VideoGame/SakuraWars'', another Creator/{{Sega}} property in which players take control of multiple units whose movement is determined by a decreasing gauge and whose combat performance can be altered by having a Commander issue them orders. This is helped by the ''VideoGame/SakuraWars'' games. Helped in part be fact the developers having have worked on the previous series.

* ThatOneBoss:
** Selvaria the third (and final) time you face her. Most of her difficulty comes from the fact that she has a ''machine gun'' and will use up to three of her AP to ventilate any sucker in her tremendous field of vision (as in, she can attack the couple of exposed allies ''at your starting location'' far); and that she's a Scout (270° sight cone) with Ace Engineer evasion (if you aren't backstabbing her or proc Undodgeable Shot, she's almost certain to dodge). She's rather frail for a boss if she gets smoked (so she can't counter or see) or pinned between tanks (especially if the Shamrock is either Gatling or Flame), but good luck getting a tank all the way there to begin with.
** The final boss seems straightforward: knock out the towers powering the boss, then knock out the boss. However, the towers are hard to hit, and keep coming back on line, which eats into your "kill boss" time. Once the boss's health gets below a certain level, he starts regenerating, so if you can't finish him off on what's left of your turn, you may not be able to finish him off on your next turn either.
** Selvaria, even with the Ruhm, doesn't hold a candle to Jaeger and the Lupus Regnum two chapters later.

* ItWasHisSled: A ton of the game's twists are now common knowledge. One of the biggest endgame reveals becomes a plot point in the opening of ''VideoGame/ValkyriaChroniclesII'', so it's basically impossible to avoid being spoiled on that one.

** Alicia, lethally accurate, highly mobile, and eventually able to heal to full in a turn, [[spoiler:and unleash her Valkyria powers when injured]]. She can solo many levels. Most orders given to other soldiers eventually exist to support her one woman war. Scout Rush in general is a GameBreaker (see DungeonBypass in main page). It's just that as the game progresses, "scout rush" becomes "Alicia rush" due to how powerful she is. This is the reason why the production team decided to nerf the scouts down a bit in Valkyria Chronicles II.
** The Awaken Potential Order can be quite powerful depending on who it is used on. As mentioned above, it can make unbalanced characters like Alicia into a [[OneManArmy One Woman Army]] considering it greatly increases the chance of powerful potentials like Resist Crossfire (where you can often walk through heavy interception fire without much fear), Mysterious Body (automatic full healing), Valkyria (attacks are more powerful and accurate), Undodgeable Shot (self explanatory), and Double Movement (often allowing you to cross the entire mission map in one or two turns) activating. With enough stacked boosts and high enough class levels, Alicia can even take out tanks by herself or A rank missions in record time.
** A straighter version of this trope is Selvaria in her DLC. She's got the movement speed, stamina and accuracy of a Scout, the firepower of a Shocktrooper and the defense of a Lancer. That she doesn't carry ragnaid is of little consequence as you're probably not going to need to use it on her.

Rewording entry to remove Word Cruft.

** The Report Chapter "Flower of The Battlefield": Firstly you're limited to 5 party members, secondly you don't have Alicia for this mission, taking away your best character and reducing your CP. Thirdly it's a wide open battlefield with very little cover and a load of enemies, meaning if you're not careful you'll be riddled with bullets. While a good sniper can help take out the opposition they can't take down the tanks which all have machine guns mounted on them which means you can't get close without taking heavy fire. Your only real option to take these down in a reasonable length of time is run in with a lancer and blast them in the back before you get killed yourself. Oh did we mention a good portion of the enemies are hiding, and they can easily sneak around you and take the base while you're occupied elsewhere, this is one of the few missions where your base being captured is a real threat. This mission can come as a nasty shock as the rest of the report missions are relatively easy.

These tropes are Flame Bait now.

* IdiotPlot:
** Most of the drama could have been avoided if anyone was willing to attend to Alicia's emotional state for a few minutes. Turns out InternalizedCategorism is bad for [[spoiler: newly-awakened Valkyria.]]
** Or if either of the Valkyria realized that they are the proverbial 300-pound gorillas that can sit anywhere they want.
** Max could have just married Cordelia, political marriages are a thing nobles do. He didn't have to start a war to do that and it probably would've been less costly for everyone involved. Maximillian may not have been honest about the reasons he wanted it, but the point of the war was to get his hands on more ragnite; Gallia has a lot of ragnite and not much else, and since he [[spoiler: has nothing to gain by ending the lie that the Valkyrur were angelic savior figures]], he's the best chance of a [[spoiler: non-Darcsen heir]] on the Gallian throne. But then we wouldn't have a game!
** Even excluding the emotional aspect of the Valkyria revelation, the plots handles the practicality of it pretty stupidly. Strangely enough the Empire gets a StrawmanHasAPoint moment when it's mentioned that a Valkyria can make the road to victory shorter even if the war can ultimately be won by more conventional means. [[spoiler:Welkin and Alicia decide that it's better to not use the power of the Valkyria ''at all'' and instead risk the lives of the other members of the team by attempting to win with more conventional warfare. And had Faldio not awakened Alicia as a Valkyria, it's entirely possible that Gallia would've lost the battle at Naggiar and all the other sacrifices up to that point would have been in vain. The game attempts to have a HeWhoFightsMonsters aesop, but it can easily fall into HonorBeforeReason territory because the characters only look at the Valkyria in terms of extremes, rather than as just another tool in the war effort.]]
** [[spoiler:During the late game, Faldio shoots Alicia with a sniper rifle to awaken her Valkyria powers in the heat of battle. Instead of salvaging a enemy sniper rifle, or "borrowing" a standartly issued rifle, Faldio has the idea of using a special two-in-a-kind rifle. Of course, this is just for the plot quickly move along from the mystery of "Who Shot Alicia."]]

* WhatAnIdiot: After Selvaria's surrender, Damon's soldiers pistol whip her in the back of the head to try and render her unconscious with the justification that she's a PersonOfMassDestruction who's safer unconscious. When this fails and she gets back up, no other attempts are made, and in fact Damon immediately has her brought to him afterwards so he can gloat over his victory, with nothing but a pair of handcuffs stopping this living magical [[OneManArmy One Woman Army]] from killing him. [[spoiler: She naturally ends up doing a hell of a lot more than just killing him.]]

How did Alicia forget about it until she fought Selvaria? What is going on here? ''Stop trying to write your own story, dammit!'' It wouldn't have been bad if they actually followed it through, but like with the revelation that the Darcsen Calamity was actually the Valkyria's fault, it was dropped and we never heard about it again.]]

Bit of trivia showing just how rough getting to chapter 9 can be

* GoodBadBug: The PC port initially shipped with a bug where the damage of interception fire was dependant on framerate, meaning at 60 FPS it was twice as dangerous. [[https://steamcommunity.com/app/294860/discussions/0/624075036381183226 Some players]] actually ''preferred'' it this way and hoped the damage increase would stick after the bug was fixed, since it meant the common cheese strategy of rushing the objectives with scouts no longer worked.

That wasn't a typo. This game takes place in a continent called "Europa".

* MisaimedFandom: ''Valkyria Chronicles'' is a DieselPunk fantasy with elements of MedievalEuropeanFantasy. Some people nonetheless complain about certain aspects of the setting, like imperial soldiers dressed like knights, rocket launchers shaped like jousting lances, or the empire having [[spoiler:some extremely large tanks]], as not being realistic, even those these are stylistic decisions that are not intended to be realistic.

** With Largo, it's understandable that a veteran soldier would have reservations about taking orders from someone who he has reason to believe only got his rank through education and social status. However, Largo was offered promotion several times, but rejected the offer because he wanted to stay on the front lines. Saying you don't want somthing and then holding a grudge about someone else getting it can be seen as...well, childish...
