** For the first few months of Awards Season, both the film and George Clooney's performance were considered frontrunners in the Best Picture and Best Actor categories, then ''TheHurtLocker'' started gaining momentum as a BP contender, ''Film/CrazyHeart''s release was pushed forward, and ''Film/{{Avatar}}'' came out, leaving poor ''Film/UpInTheAir'' behind in the dust.

** 'Goin' Home' by [[TheBlackKeys Dan Auberach]], weird that a film about an emotionally distant man has so many heartwarming songs.

** They weren't just sexting, they were [=BlackBerry=] Messenger...exting
** Ryan and Alex getting off on each other's elite statuses.
** Even while talking to a heartbroken girl, Ryan manages a snappy one liner.
---> '''Natalie:''' ''(sobbing)'' He broke up with me by text message!\\
'''Ryan:''' Wow. That's kinda like getting fired over the Internet.
** The moment when Natalie starts crying about her break-up is quite hilarious too.

* TheScrappy: Not until the end of the film, but it's really hard to like Alex after, [[spoiler: the revelation that she had a family and was just using Ryan for an affair when he had fallen in love with her.]] It's no wonder why the small amount of fanfiction pairs Ryan with Natalie.
* TearJerker:
** Ryan going to see Alex to start a relationship, only to see she is married with a family.
** Ryan discovering that one of the people he fired committed suicide.
** The shot of Natalie sitting in a room full of empty desk chairs.
** Natalie again, when the audience and Ryan learn she quit, all we see is a quick, silent shot of her departing self in a terminal walkway.
** The montage near the end, with all of the RealLife firees talking about how important their families are to them and how they'll help them get through being unemployed.

* EndingFatigue: Natalie successfully conducts her first day of layoffs, and Ryan attends his sister's wedding, where he learns that "everyone needs a co-pilot," with the implication that he has finally gotten the inspiration he needs to begin a more meaningful relationship with Alex. Great place to leave off, right? But what's this? Alex has a husband? And children? And then Ryan clocks in his ten-millionth flyer mile? And one of Natalie's layoffs commits suicide? And Natalie quits her job out of grief? And the remote layoff program is suspended? And then Natalie applies for ''another'' job...
