** One particularly poignant example is the story of some of the ISV Kran survivors that unfolds over several levels. In the Sunspire, you find a dead team who were looking for a captured crewmate. One of the dead crewmen appears to be her boyfriend. Later, at Bluff Eversmoking, you find another dead search party. From Krall jailer logs lying about the monastary, you discover that she was being held there but the Nali helped her to escape, but in the end you find her [[spoiler:dead in the bell tower.]] This makes the story of the Kran's crew something of a ShootTheShaggyDog.
** This gets a nod in the bio of one of VideoGame/UnrealTournament's warriors:
--> Having survived the Wreck of the ISV-Kran, Luthienne was forced to watch all her friends and crewmates die at the hands of the Skaarj until she and 3 others were rescued two years later. Irreparably scarred by her experience, she has entered the Tournament to confront her inner demons and ultimately to silence them through her own death.

* GoddamnedBats: "Fssssttt... raagh!" You'd have to ''really'' suck to be killed by the tiny, spider-like Pupae, but they sure are damn annoying (primarily because their hitboxes are so narrow that it's really hard to kill them once they get close, which they invariably do).

** One particularly poignant example is the story of some of the ISV Kran survivors that unfolds over several levels. [[spoiler:In the Sunspire, you find a dead team who were looking for a captured crewmate, Kira Argmanov. One of the dead crewmen appears to be her boyfriend ("I love you Kira, I swear I'll find you."). Later, at Bluff Eversmoking, you find another dead search party (also looking for Kira), which includes Medical Officer Tatiana Zimna (who left you several messages on the ISV Kran). From Krall jailer logs lying about the monastary, you discover that Kira was being held there but the Nali helped her to escape, but in the end you find Kira dead in the [[ForDoomTheBellTolls bell tower]].]] This makes the story of [[spoiler:the Kran's crew]] something of a ShootTheShaggyDog. Oh, and [[spoiler:the way the Krall spoke about her in the logs]] makes you wish every Skaarj, Krall and races alike were dead for real.
** This is later [[ContinuityNod referenced]] in the bio of one of VideoGame/UnrealTournament's warriors, Luthienne:

* SceneryPorn: ''Unreal'' pioneered it for video games in its era. And because of the standard set by this game, a whole lot of the fan map packs also qualify. Go ahead, [[http://www.unrealsp.org/community/reviews.html browse some reviews]].

* BreatherLevel: Serpent Canyon, which comes right after the enemy-infested labyrinth that is Cellars at Dasa.

** Another example from the expansion pack: Pack Hunters, which border on DemonicSpiders. One of the fastest-moving enemies in the game, they can corner and kill an unprepared player ''very'' quickly.
