* QuestionableCasting: There was some pre-show disdain from some Riku was being played by a high schooler after Series/UltramanOrb cast an actor in his 30s to play the lead.

** Gyeron Starbem's reappearance was also unexpected, especially since its debut episode was banned in 2011 due to the Fukushima nuclear incident, leading to many fans assuming that much like Alien Spell, it would never appear again.

Moving this to due to being an in-universe example.

* TheWoobie: An in-universe example goes to [[spoiler:Ultraman Belial, of all people, who spends his entire life haunted by revenge against the Ultras of the Land of Light for his banishment, despite wanting to let go of it. Riku apparently gives him a hug and in response, the Rayblood that assimilated with him was expelled]].

Added DiffLines:

* BrokenBase: Gyeron's reappearance in this series has been quite controversial. Some fans felt that the lack of social commentary in the episode or references to its origins as a victim of a nuclear test was a disservice to the monster. Others, however, were happy that even though the original ''Series/UltraSeven'' episode it appeared in was banned following the 2011 Fukushima nuclear incident, Gyeron could still appear in newer shows unlike Alien Spell, and felt the original story protesting against nuclear deterrence was a plot unsuited for modern audiences.

Added DiffLines:

* UnexpectedCharacter:
** The Shadow Aliens were a minor villain race back in ''Series/UltraSeven'' and didn't have any reappearances before this show, so having a named Alien Shadow as one of the protagonists is quite a surprise.
** Gyeron Starbem's reappearance was also unexpected, especially since its debut episode was banned in 2011 due to the Fukushima nuclear incident, leading to many fans assuming that much like Alien Spell, it would never appear again.

Not YMMV

* OddballInTheSeries: The series breaks two unwritten rules of the franchise in the first '''four''' episodes alone. One of Riku's potential love interests learns his identity in the first few moments they meet, and multiple Ultras have familial ties.

* ToughActToFollow: Series/UltramanOrb was received extremely well by fans on both sides of the Pacific, especially Hideo Ishiguro's performance as Gai Kurenai. The jury is still out on Geed's reception, with some not finding Riku to be as good a protagonist and the early episodes lacking.

The first thing he does in this series, during his fourth attack on the Land of Light, is defeat all the Ultramen before setting off a bomb that would [[OmnicidalManiac wipe out all life in their universe]]. However this was a XanatosGambit: either Belial kills them all and gets his revenge, or he gets Ultraman King out of the picture.
