* EnsembleDarkhorse: ''Good lord'', the '''Theme of Sicily'''. Despite being a minor, unplayable faction in the ''Age of Charlemagne'' DLC, there ''insanely'' popular, with already several mods made solely to increase their rooster, and make them playable on the grand campaign. It helps that they have unique units (despite being unplayable without mods), and they're essentially an early version of the Byzantines.

* AuthorsSavingThrow: The Alans were roundly criticized at game launch for having no real factional identity of their own and being a copy-pasted Germanic faction, despite not being remotely Germanic. The "free-LC" update completely overhauled their unit roster, removing most of their infantry and every single "Germanic" unit in their arsenal and replacing them with Alan-specific units - particularly cavalry units, which turn them into the most cavalry-focused faction in the game (even more so than the Huns).

* TheyJustDidntCare: There are Picts, Ebdenians and Caledonians in this game. Unfortunately they didn't have enough time/inclination to design a separate Celtic/Bretonnic culture for the game so they just use Germanic or Nordic assets to represent them. This leads to such things as the Picts sweeping down upon Roman Britain with a horde of Norse berserkers and Viking warriors. The recently released Celtic Culture DLC pack fixes it though. They use the same campaign intro as the Germanics and Norsemen though, so your supposedly "Celtic" warlord will be kneeling before a statue of Wotan. They also didn't get their own building models like the Germanics or Romans, so be prepared to see a lot of Wodin statues when besieging Celtic settlements.
** There were no such people as the "Ebdanians", that name being a 19th century transcription error for the "Eblani". Strangely, the Eblani were correctly named in Rome 2, the previous game.
*** The High King of Ireland at the time of the game was Nath Í mac Fiachrach, but the faction leader for the Ebdanians is a fictional character called Vosenios.
*** Ireland's religious status at the start of the game is 100% Celtic Pagan, but the 5th century chronicler Prosper of Aquitaine recorded that there were Christian communities in Ireland at the time.
** This is also present but much worse with the Antean and Sclavenian factions, who are supposed to be Slavic tribes, but use Germanic assets and have Turkic paganism as their religion. Hell, even the Celtic factions had their own religion before they got their DLC makeover. On the other hand, Turkic paganism and Slavic paganism are to an extent rather similar, but this still doesn't excuse the Sclavenians and other Slavic tribes not having their own faith.
** You could also make the case for this with the Viking DLC factions. They're an extremely strong culture to play as, no doubt, but for the most part they're just Saxons with much more attack power. Notably, unlike the Celts or Longobards, they didn't get their own saga storyline or unique general. Despite being probably the most suited culture for it.
