* ArcFatigue: The "Harem Plan" in ''Darkness'' has really a slow development, even after that the "Darkness" plot is resolved.

* AmericansHateTingle: While Haruna has regained fans in Japan by "Darkness", outside she is again considered a boring character and hated especially because is the main ''menace'' to Harem Plan.

* RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap: Despite being DemotedToExtra in the original manga and the early parts of ''Darkness'' (with regards to Yabuki's CreatorBreakdown), Haruna is slowly regaining fans; the most recent poll even places her at ''the top of favorite characters''.

** Yui, arguably the more well-received and popular female character of the cast. In one online poll of all the females for the original manga, Yui came in first with at least 50% more votes than the runner-up. Fans love their {{Tsundere}}s and Yui fits the archetype better than most other examples in the medium.
*** This is more of a GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff: in Japan, Yui's decently popular but not too big, because the Japanese EnsembleDarkhorse is Mikan ([[LittleMissSnarker for]] [[TokenMiniMoe certain]] [[OnlySaneMan reasons]]), though she would grow just as popular outside of Japan later.

* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: If the series was to ever push the storytelling farther than just the [[HaremGenre Harem-plan]] shenanigans surrounding Rito, the potential is there to become a full-blown action series where Rito works himself up to become the next ruler of the universe. The few times in ''Darkness'' where Nemesis uses her Dark Matter to protect Rito from danger while they're SharingABody is quite literally the author teasing the fanbase that this scenario of Rito becoming an action-hero could possibly happen.

** Another notable character that sometimes gets mentioned as being wasted compared to her two other two Deviluke sisters is Nana. Apart from an early ''Darkness'' StoryArc surrounding her broken friendship with Mea, Nana hasn't had much else going for her.

** In Chapter 144 of the manga, a perverted spirit takes over Zastin's body and tries to undress every female he sees. He reveals the reason he's gone rampant is because he was rejected by 500 different girls during his life, and agrees to leave if he can touch even one girl's breasts. [[CuteGhostGirl Oshizu Murasame]] agrees, but just before the spirit touches her, she pulls the spirit out of Zastin's body and burns him away with her [[GhostLights spirit flame]]. The spirit's final words? "I knew it! Women are liars!" Considering illustrator Kentaro Yabuki's [[HarsherInHindsight then-current situation with his ex-wife]]...(although even Oshizu admits she did "something horrible" afterwards)

** Despite appearing in the late arcs of the original manga, Momo [[LoveableSexManiac due to]] [[ClingyJealousGirl particular]] [[MsFanservice reasons]], so much so that she's promoted to heroine in ''Darkness''.

* GrowingTheBeard: ''Darkness'' is seen by many as a jump in quality compared to the original series since it brought about major CharacterDevelopment for the side-characters surrounding Rito, with criticisms usually being [[OutOfFocus Lala and Haruna get pushed to the side]] and [[FlatCharacter Rito exists in the sequel just to end up in]] even *crazier* {{Ecchi}} situations that [[UptoEleven border on being softcore hentai.]] The appearance of Nemesis to serve as a counterpart to Momo made things slightly more interesting, up to and including [[spoiler:Nemesis SharingABody with Rito]].

** "He can't keep getting away with it!", referring to how Yabuki just keeps pushing the boundary of what's acceptable by Japanese censor laws.

** Most fans consider Run the least interesting member of the harem. Don't help that she has not a real good motive to love Rito, has a childish personality (in the first series) and in "Darkness" her screentime is more reduced.

** The ''Manga/BlackCat''-[[{{Expy}} based characters]] - some ''Black Cat'' fans are annoyed with the changes made to their favorite characters in ''To-Love-Ru'', while others enjoy the alternate versions of them.
** Rito is a very divisive character, especially in ''Darkness'', where some readers often accuse him to be a living device who triggers {{Ecchi}} situations without any CharacterDevelopment (in contrast to the original manga).
* BrokenBase: The Harem Plan in ''Darkness''. It is a real possibility for a MarryThemAll ending or it's useless because Rito will end up [[FirstGirlWins with Haruna or Lala]]? Or [[OT3 both?]].

* TheScrappy: The Principal is [[{{Gonk}} ugly, fat]] and a pervert whose only role is simply getting beat up by the female characters whenever he dashes half-naked towards them. While this character should provide what amounts to ComicRelief, the interruptions that occur as a result of him has become increasingly annoying, frustrating and unnecessary, especially when certain scenes that are meant to build drama and tension are instantly cut away by him, often resulting in MoodWhiplash.

* FunnyAneurysmMoment
** The NotHerself chapter in the first series where Haruna acted like an evil sadist was pretty funny, until the woman whom she was based on, Yabuki's ex-wife, rather than being a sweet GirlNextDoor type was actually a hateful, sadistic woman on top of being a philanderer, thief, kidnapper and extortionist. It seemed as if writer Hasemi Saki was trying to tell Yabuki something...
*** The writer probably was: by the time Yabuki knew about it, Yui was [[AscendedExtra written in more and more subsequent chapters]] and Haruna was [[DemotedToExtra written out]]. Undoubtedly, it's probably what led to Yui's EnsembleDarkhorse status, but one doesn't write out one of two female protagonists (as Haruna was a heroine in the original) in favor of a secondary character without good reason.
