* WinBackTheCrowd: After a long stretch of his career in which he fell from "The Next Spielberg" (as once proclaimed by ''Newsweek'') to industry laughingstock, ''The Visit'' was his first critical ''and'' commercial success in over a decade, with a Rotten Tomatoes score just shy of the Certified Fresh 70% mark and a successful box office run of $65 million domestic and just under $100 million globally on a scant $5 million budget. Since then, his movies have been profitable while critical reception has run mixed-to-positive, but leagues better than his infamous entries.

** It seems to be this way critically right now as well, with a Rotten Tomatoes percentage in the 60% range.
** With the glowing reception of ''{{Film/Split}}'', it's clear that this film was simply the first step.
** Another big part of it is that the film is as much comedy as horror, rather than his attempts at deadly serious films that ended up full of [[{{Narm}} unintentional laughs]].

** How much of Nana's ([[spoiler:Claire]]) interactions with the children was an act? [[spoiler: Pop Pop (Mitchel) seems to be the brains behind what is going on. She does have her creepy moments but it isn't until the end of the film where she physically attacks one of the children, and by then it seems like she has gone completely off the deep end. For all we know, Mitchel killed the grandparents by himself and just brought poor Claire along for the ride.]]

* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: Loretta. Is she a good mother who wants the best for her children, including introducing them to their lovely grandparents whom she has a bad history with? Or is she neglectful and selfish, sending her kids away so she can have a cruise and brushing off their concerns about their grandparents so she can continue to enjoy herself? The fact that she [[spoiler:tries to call the police and save her kids the moment it becomes apparent that they're in danger in the actual film.]]

* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: Loretta. Is she a good mother who wants the best for her children, including introducing them to their lovely grandparents whom she has a bad history with? Or is she neglectful and selfish, sending her kids away so she can have a cruise and brushing off their concerns about their grandparents so she can continue to enjoy herself? The fact that she hated her parents for fifteen years [[HotForStudent because they didn't approve of her substitute teacher dating her]] implies she's at least not the most reasonable person, but it is in her favor that she [[spoiler:tries to call the police and save her kids the moment it becomes apparent that they're in danger in the actual film.]]

* MagnificentBitch: [[ScrewTheRulesIHaveMoney Claire Zachanassian]] is a billionaire and former resident of Güllen who seeks revenge against a shopkeeper named Alfred III for forcing her into prostitution and taking away her child after a paternity suit years ago. She begins her quest by buying out Güllen's industry, causing the town to go into a depression. Arriving in Güllen, [[DealWithTheDevil she promises that she'll grant one billion francs to the poor populace should they kill Alfred]], making it clear she won't leave until they do. [[BatmanGambit Knowing full well that the townsfolk will do anything to get money]], her actions force the town to go against their morals and face the reality of what Alfred has done. After they kill Alfred, Claire upholds her end of the bargain, delivers the check, and [[KarmaHoudini gets away with Alfred's murder]] while bringing Güllen out of their economic starvation.

* WhatAnIdiot: Stacey, you know these people are the escaped mental patients. You know that the people living at the house you're visiting haven't been seen for days. You're actively confronting said mental patients. Why are you going to follow them behind the house instead of getting help?

* MagnificentBastard: Claire. [[spoiler:''She'' ruined the town of Guellen herself, by buying up all the big businesses and shutting them down, so that by the time she'd came by they'd do ''anything'' for her money...]]

* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: It's possible the mother in question is very neglectful when it comes to her kids. Hence her lack of concern when they frantically try to inform her about their grandparents.
** It should be noted that [[spoiler:[[TrailersAlwaysLie unlike the trailers]], [[AvertedTrope she tries to call the police the moment it becomes apparent her kids are in danger in the actual film.]]]]

* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: Loretta can come across as not very sympathetic, considering the rift between her and her parents was initially caused by the fact they didn't like her boyfriend... who was also her substitute teacher. And wound up abandoning them eventually anyway.

** Pop Pop keeping all his dirty diapers in the shed out back. [[spoiler: Nana'sexplanation seems reasonable, but considering the mental unstability of both of them, he could just be doing it for no real reason at all. ]]

** If you've seen the trailers for the movie, you may remember Nana saying the line, "Can you get ''inside'' the oven to clean it?", and you wre probably conflicted over whether or not that was supposed to be scary.

** Pop Pop keeping all his dirty diapers in the shed out back. [[spoiler: Nana's explanation seems reasonable, but considering the mental instability of both of them, he could just be doing it for no real reason at all. ]]

* AngstWhatAngst: [[spoiler: The end of the movie has Becca and Tyler seeming to suffer no ill psychological effects of being held prisoner by two mentally ill people, learning their grandparents and one other woman they met had been murdered, or having to murder two dangerous people themselves. If anything, they seem better than ever. Becca actually comes across as healthier, and the credits even play over Tyler rapping about their entire experience.]]

* MonsterSobStory: [[spoiler: Nana]], near the climax of the film. [[spoiler: She's shown throughout the entire movie as a really, really sick woman, both physical and mentally. But unlike Pop Pop, who spent the entire week putting up an act, her 'normal' moments with the kids are implied to be genuine. Seeing her mental health slowly degenerating, culminating at the point where she breaks down to tears and tries to choke herself with a scarf can be particularly heartbreaking, specially due to Deanna Dunagan's brilliant performance.]]

** Tyler's penchant for rapping, while intentionally awkward at times, can make one cringe due to the amount of it shown in the film. [[spoiler: Including the end-credits where he raps about their whole experience with no trauma whatsoever, describing what it was like to have an adult diaper shoved in his face, etc.]]

* TearJerker: [[spoiler: The fate of Tyler and Becca's real grandparents, especially when you also take into account that their mom never got to reconcile with them before they were killed, despite being given several opportunities to do so beforehand.]]
** Doubly so when one considers that [[spoiler:''everyone'' had nothing but good things to say about the real grandparents, who seemed to be truly kind and understanding people. Given the issues Becca and Tyler were working through, their grandparents probably could have given a lot of support. Not to mention, the grandparents sounded very excited to meet their grandchildren for the first time, only to lose that chance because they told someone and it went badly.]]
** [[spoiler: A minor one but both Tyler and Becca's inability to come to grips with the departure of their father, who abandoned them and their mother. In particular when Tyler asks her Becca if she feels worthless regarding their father running out of their lives. Cue cutting to Becca crying in private and lamenting over how her father simply gave her a ''card'' to say goodbye]].
** [[spoiler: The ending showing Becca and Tyler's mom ''regretting'' never making amends with her parents and urging Becca to not hold a grudge or hate for so long towards her father like she did to her parents. The next scene after that? ''Clips of Tyler and Becca's family with their father before he left'']].

* NightmareFuel: Grandma's scratching at the walls and laughing at nothing, Grandpa is messing with his gun and there's something weird in the shed, and Mom's far away and doesn't believe you when you say something's wrong. [[spoiler:And those aren't your grandparents.]]
** Becca being asked by Nana to clean the oven is incredibly unnerving, especially given how the grandmother becomes somewhat detached and insists that Becca put her ''entire body'' in to clean it properly. [[spoiler:The second time is even worse, since the children now know that their "grandparents" are impostors and this time, Nana ''shuts the door while Becca's inside'' to wipe off the door. The oven door, incidentally, is what has the knobs to turn it on. It's understandable why Tyler tries to have her let him do it instead.]]

** The boy's penchant for rapping, while intentionally awkward at times, can make one cringe due to the amount of it shown in the film. * BrokenBase: Tyler. People either find him and his rapping unbearably annoying and unfunny or think he's hilarious and even endearing at times.
