* CharacterRerailment: A few characters are written far more like their early season selves than the portrayals they had at the time of the film's release.
** After Bart spent the newer seasons gradually becoming more and more sociopathic in his pranks, the film puts him back in his initial characterization of a misguided boy whose pranks are harmless but due to peer pressure can go too far with them and even then does feel guilt about it.
** After gradually getting {{flanderized}} into a nasty religious zealot for comedy's sake across the seasons, Ned Flanders is once again portrayed as he originally was: a kindly and caring neighbour who wishes nothing but goodwill on everyone and remains one of the few citizens not to turn on the family after Homer's screw-up, he even bonds with Bart due to his kindness in one of the film's subplots.

* OlderThanTheyThink: Throughout the film, Bart repeatedly wishes that Ned Flanders was his father instead of Homer. One [[ComicBook/TheSimpsons of the older comic book stories]] has a wad of gum mistaken for a birth mark resulting in the belief that Bart and one of Ned's sons were switched at birth and Bart temporarily ''is'' one of Flanders' sons, but due to Ned having a strict Christian upbringing in mind for his sons as opposed to Homer's Devil-may-care attitude towards child-raising, Bart does not have a good time at Ned's and repeatedly wishes he was back with Homer as his dad.

Why "thankfully"? What is considered "kid-friendly" differs from family to family.

* WhatDoYouMeanItsNotForKids: Not that the [[WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons original TV series]] was ever intended for kids in the first place, but this movie contains slightly more edge than the show. Special mentions go to Bart skateboarding naked with uncensored shots of his buttocks and briefly his genitalia[[note]]which is thankfully drawn very unrealistically to prevent this movie from getting the "R" rating and gets censored or cut out in television broadcasts, but is still shocking seeing the first occurrence of full-frontal nudity in ''The Simpsons''[[/note]] and Marge saying "[[PrecisionFStrike God damn]]", which never would have made it into a TV episode. The nudity scene with Bart and Marge's cuss word caused the movie to get the "PG-13" rating, meaning that it's unadvised to watch the movie without a parent or guardian for who's below the age of 13, although some of the developers were worried that just because of the scene with Bart skateboarding naked, the movie could be rated "R", meaning that it's forbidden for minors (below the age of 17) to watch the movie without a parent or guardian. Despite this, Malaysia was lenient enough to give it a U rating.[[note]]the country's equivalent to America's G rating[[/note]] Likewise, the movie had several tie-ins with children's companies like Burger King and was advertised heavily during Creator/{{Nickelodeon}} and Creator/CartoonNetwork commercial breaks. To top it all off, it was a nomination for Favorite Animated Movie in the 2008 Kids' Choice Awards, but thankfully lost to the more kid-friendly ''WesternAnimation/{{Ratatouille}}''.

*** FridgeHorror for this reason. Even on the subject of NegativeContinuity, what if all the denizens of Springfield bottled up their frustrations with the Simpsons' antics? And that anger kept bottling up for so long. And then the dome happens, and the genie's out of the bottle, then they're all equally guilty for being general nuisances to the town.
** When the family tries to make it to Flanders' house for refuge, Principle Skinner has his own team of archers. The idea that grade-school students want to see Bart and Lisa dead is scary, but the idea that they ''want to kill them themselves''? Horrifying...
** The backyard scene, arguably the most terrifying part. [[HopeSpot Just when it looked like the family will drive away safely, it actuallity, they're being carried to the backyard]]. They then see nooses being set up for all of them, [[WouldHurtaChild including the kids]] (with a pacifier for Maggie's noose)!
** Although soon after that, we get another terrifying moment, seeing [[EtTuBrute Abe point a shotgun at his own daughter-in-law and grandkids.]]

** '''[[BigBad Russ]] [[KnightOfCerebus Cargill]]'''. Don't get us wrong, he does have genuinely funny moments in the movie and Albert Brooks' voice acting is well done, but there's no denying how horrifying this man is throughout the movie.
*** His willingness to trap an entire town in a dome for the foreseeable future. While he ''didn't'' choose Option 3 the first time, the idea that that was one of the options is terrifying, [[FridgeHorror especially since we don't know the other options and how devastating they could potentially be]].
*** When the Simpsons escape the dome via the sinkhole, some of his gags are funny, but one EPA agent put it best at Cargill's current state of mind, "[[WithGreatPowerComesGreatInsanity Sir, you've gone mad with power]]."
*** ''[[CerebusRetcon Option 4]]''. While the dome did provide some humour, it's this moment when the stakes are as higher than ever. Mad with power, Cargill manipulates President Schwarzenegger into choosing Option 4, and when he takes the document, he stares into space with an uneven smile, it looks ''wrong'', like he already knows it. Then he unpacks the document, [[WhamLine "OPTION 4 - BLOW UP SPRINGFIELD"]]. He knows there are innocent (supposedly, considering Springfield) people and ''children'' in the town, yet still decides to blow it up, make a natural monument, and profit off of it. He has effectively crossed the MoralEventHorizon, not giving a single damn about the consequences or welfare of the people he trapped.
*** Even his final stance against Homer after the dome is blown to smithereens. He knows he will get into a lot of trouble now that the word is out, but he still strives to do one more thing despite this. ''Kill Homer (and [[WouldHurtAChild presumably Bart]])''. He aims a shotgun at both of them, and comes ''very'', '''very''' close to pulling the trigger. [[BigDamnheroes Thank god for Maggie's intervention]].

* TrailerJokeDecay: Played straight with “Spider-Pig, Spider-Pig. Does whatever a Spider-Pig does.” Being played over and over and over again. However It’s also subverted in the sense that the trailer does not show the funny punch line; “Can he swing, from a web? No he can’t. He’s a pig.” This was a very pleasant surprise for the audience.
