* VindicatedByHistory: It's now considered one of Creator/BillyWilder's best, and many consider it the greatest movie about Sherlock Holmes. Creator/MarkGatiss creator of ''Series/{{Sherlock}}'' considers it the best and cites it as an influence on his take on the character.
* TheWoobie: Holmes. Early on, Watson overshoots his bounds with a question about Holmes's past, and Holmes, previously in decent humor, gets cool and goes to his room. Later on, the man himself tells Madame Valladon that his fiancee died just a day before the wedding. He seems to have gotten over it, but the fact remains that he was ''that'' close to getting married once. The end simply tops it off, and ''Watson'' isn't about to deny him his cocaine.

* CrowningMusicOfAwesome: Dear heaven, the ''score''. It is orchestral, epic, and ethereal.

* CharacterDerailment: Watson is, as usual, relegated to comic relief. Mycroft is canonically BrilliantButLazy, but here he's presented as the [[spoiler:ambitious head of a secret shadow organization that apparently runs independently of the British Government.]]

Trope was redefined for In Universe use only.

* AdaptationDecay: In addition to the CharacterDerailment, the Diogenes Club is NOT ever mentioned to be some secret shadow organization (and apparently you can speak in there now), and suddenly Holmes is into women.
