** There was [[FlameWar a rampant civil war]] started among fans about whether changing Link's gender would be a good idea, especially after Aonuma said that they'll listen to the demands of the fans on this matter. While male Link has since been confirmed, there have been three camps:
*** Those who want the series to be like it's always been. They argue that, despite being a HeroicMime, Link already has an established character, and it would mess up his iconic status. They also say it would not fit well in the lore of the franchise, considering the relationship between Link and Zelda is one of an ImpliedLoveInterest more often than not, and that the mythology of the series always refers to the legendary hero as a male (also, in ''[[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaSkywardSword Skyward Sword]]'', [[spoiler:Demise explicitly used the male word for "hero" when he cast his curse]]).
*** Those who like the idea of a game with a female protagonist, but would prefer it to be someone other than the long-standing Link. Zelda is by far the most demanded option, especially since this is something that's been talked about among the fan base for much longer, and there are even [[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaSpiritTracks precedents of her being playable in the main series]]. There are also those who mention a possible sister of Link (who could be or not be [[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaTheWindWaker Aryll]]), or even a brand new female character altogether.
*** Those who want Link to be a girl, or at least, to have that option. They argue that there isn't any real reason for not doing it, and argue that Link ''isn't'' an established character, but multiple individuals with the same name. (supported by ''Twilight Princess'' having two Links at the same time, the protagonist and the Hero's Shade, and undermined by Ganon in ''Wind Waker'' explicitly referring to Link as "the hero of time reborn"). It fits the {{Reincarnation}} theme of the series, it would bring fresh air to the franchise, it would send a positive message (''[[AnAesop anyone]]'' [[AnAesop can be a hero]]), it'd have the potential of catalyzing a profound change in women representation in the video game industry, if not popular culture as a whole, and if they give the option to choose gender, it would fit the character's role as the AudienceSurrogate, making it easier for female players to project themselves into the character.

** As always, there's debate about the game's art style. On one side are people who wanted a more realistic style like the E3 2011 tech demo, and on the other side are people who love the game's stylized aesthetic.
** The possibility of things being more {{Magitek}} this time around has caused a stir. Some say it's too advanced for the Zelda series (despite the trains and steam powered boats before it), while others think it's a refreshing new take on the series and the logical conclusion of where the Zelda series should be heading.
** Link's design. Link is almost always at least a little androgynous; however, this Link's apparently young age (younger than the 'adult Link' but not quite 'young Link'), long hair, and the art style of the game make him look [[DudeLooksLikeALady even more feminine]] than other designs. Debates range from disappointment he wasn't really a girl to crying that Nintendo made him look too girly, and others who just don't see the big deal, with some fans (of either gender) finding that this new Link looks cute.
** The game's multiple release delays inevitably caused this:
*** After the first delay from 2015 to 2016, some Wii U owners were sorely disappointed, feeling that this left the Wii U's fall 2015 schedule bare (note that this announcement happened prior to E3 2015, when the Wii U's fall lineup really did look bare). Others, however, were fine with the delay as it meant the developers were really taking their time to polish up the game instead of forcing it out to meet a deadline (a la ''Wind Waker'', which had two dungeons cut because of rushed development). Some were just completely indifferent and "not surprised" as this wasn't the [[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaOcarinaOfTime first]] [[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaTwilightPrincess time]] a Zelda game had been delayed for over a year.
*** It was delayed again from 2016 to 2017, this time so that Nintendo could release the game simultaneously on the Wii U and the following console (codenamed NX). Some fans were fine with this, believing the game might still need extra work and polish, while others saw this as mainly a ploy to give the NX a completely new and attractive launch title. It didn't hurt the latter's case that Nintendo had made ''repeated'' assurances that the game was nearly done and would release in 2016, giving the impression that they were sitting on a mostly finished product and depriving Wii U owners of an early experience in order to make the NX successful.
** The debate on the first delay led to an additional division of opinions, between those who think the game should get a dual release for Wii U and the NX, remain a Wii U exclusive, or even just become an NX exclusive. With the [[https://mobile.twitter.com/NintendoAmerica/status/725224978984083456 announcement]] [[https://mobile.twitter.com/NintendoAmerica/status/725221813081522176 that]] a dual release was confirmed, the debate shifted into whether it was the right decision to make (since it would probably give the NX more success) or it was a terrible decision (as some had bought the Wii U [[KillerApp specifically for the game]]).
** The return of a right-handed Link with no motion controls like in ''Skyward Sword'' is a big part for longtime fans and lefties. This isn't helped by the fact that ''Hyrule Warriors'' and even ''Tri Force Heroes'' have Link as a lefty, and that ''[[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaTwilightPrincess Twilight Princess HD]]'' uses the left-handed, Game Cube version of Link (and the Game Cube version's game world) for the main game, only using right-handed Link (and the Wii game world) for the alternate Hero Mode.

* {{Fanon}}: The much beloved, [[WildMassGuessing "Link will be raised by the Gerudo" theory]] has [[FanficFuel caused many fanfics]].
* HilariousInHindsight: The various comments about Link looking more androgynous than usual, and the debates on whether or not making a female Link would be a good thing for the franchise, became particularly funny when the ''VideoGame/HyruleWarriors'' devs drew up concept art for a female Link called "Linkle" and eventually developed her into an actual playable character for the ''Legends'' port (though part of that development made her into just a girl who shares some similarities with Link rather than being a female incarnation of Link himself).
* InternetBackdraft:

*** Those who like the idea of a game with a female protagonist, but would prefer it to be someone other than Link. Zelda is by far the most demanded option, especially since this is something that's been talked about among the fan base for much longer, and there are even [[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaSpiritTracks precedents of her being playable in the main series]]. They argue that there's no point in changing Link's gender when "Zelda is already there". There are also those who mention a possible sister of Link (who could be or not be [[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaTheWindWaker Aryll]]), or even a brand new female character altogether.
*** Those who want Link to be a girl, or at least, to have that option. They argue that there isn't any real reason for not doing it, and argue that Link ''isn't'' an established character, but multiple individuals with the same name (supported by ''Twilight Princess'' having two Links at the same time, the protagonist and the Hero's Shade, as well as the Link from ''Wind Waker'' explicitly ''not'' being a reincarnated Link, as the hero and his soul had left that timeline completely).
** There's a Change.org petition to have Link changed to a young, black female while stating that "Creator/{{Nintendo}} went too far this time when they chose to make the new Link white and white only." The general consensus is that the petition [[PoesLaw is a deliberate joke]] making fun of SoapboxSadie types, but there has been some discussion about whether the underlying point has merit in relation to ''Zelda''.
** Anything regarding the game being given the ''Twilight Princess'' treatment and cross-releasing on two platforms. Fanatics of both opinions will fight over it in a way only internet fans can...
** The game getting delayed to 2017 and announced as a dual release for Wii U and NX. Some even called it [[SeriousBusiness the death of Nintendo]].
* MemeticMutation: Aonuma's statement "Real horses don't run into trees very often" has started to pick up steam.
* ViewerGenderConfusion: When the first trailer showed up, a lot of people got the impression that Link was a woman this time. Especially during a brief period when Aonuma said "Nobody said explictly that that is Link". The next day, he admitted that [[TrollingCreator he was just joking]], and that the character was indeed (male) Link.
* VisualEffectsOfAwesome: WordOfGod states the E3 2014 footage was engine-made footage, and ''it looks PURTY'', especially in sunset. Those insisting Aonuma was lying were put to rest in the Game Awards showcase, as it looks every bit as amazing as it did in the trailer, only held back by not being a direct screen capture.
