The hijacker touched the minivan's rear door handle.

** Earlier, when the Jackal is getting chased by some few men at the underground parking lot, he sprays some poisonous liquid on his license plate. One of said Mooks sadly (not knowing what's on that plate) touches it, foam comes out his mouth before he chokes to death.

** Even if it is still relatively easier to cross the Canada/US border than the Mexico/US border, this film showcases the pre-9/11 time when it was outright laughable.

What An Idiot is now classified as Flame Bait.

* WhatAnIdiot:
** Creator/JackBlack's character again. He just made a mount for a really big gun and decided that it was wise to blackmail Jackal over it. Worse still, he went with Jackal to test said gun and when it finally occurred to him that he could become a target, it was a bit too late...
** Which leads to the Jackal’s own What An Idiot moment, as he uses said really big gun, the one he’s going to use for his assassination plan, to murder the guy and then leaves his body and all the evidence behind instead of destroying it.

** The film is the poster child of that time Hollywood [[WhyWeAreBummedCommunismFell struggled to keep]] the SpyFiction genre alive after [[TheGreatPoliticsMessUp the fall of the USSR]]. First, unlike [[Literature/TheDayOfTheJackal the original]], which was a deliberate period piece set in early '60s France, the film takes place in modern-day America and Russia. It begins with a montage summing up the history of Russia from Nicholas II to the fall of Communism and the rise of the film's villains, TheMafiya, in the 1990s. A joint American-Russian police operation (which itself dates the film to the [[UsefulNotes/BillClinton Clinton]]-[[UsefulNotes/BorisYeltsin Yeltsin]] honeymoon when it seemed like the US and post-Soviet Russia would be allies) results in the death of a mobster's brother, who retaliates by hiring an assassin to kill a First Lady of the US that looks just like 1990s UsefulNotes/HillaryClinton, during a public act with security so light it can only be before 2001.

** But nothing will stick out more to a modern audience than the use of two [[UsefulNotes/TheTroubles ex-IRA]] and ETA[[note]]This group is not identified by name[[/note]] members as the film heroes, presented here as [[YourTerroristsAreOurFreedomFighters romantic badasses that once fought for a just cause]]. Creator/RichardGere's character, the ex-IRA man, [[PoliticallyCorrectHistory is a sniper who only targets soldiers and doesn't use bombs]], and [[EarnYourHappyEnding is allowed to walk free in America after saving the day]] even though he was supposed to be handed back to British authorities to serve the rest of his prison sentence. It's a very ugly reminder that, before the 9/11 attacks, [[WesternTerrorists the IRA]] received a great deal of sympathy and support from [[UsefulNotes/TheIrishDiaspora certain segments of the American population]] that Hollywood was more than happy to cater to, a sympathy that evaporated after the attacks showed Americans the true horror of terrorism.

* CompleteMonster: The Jackal of the 1997 remake is a ProfessionalKiller hired by the Russian mob to carry out a public assassination of [[spoiler:the First Lady]], as revenge on the United States for playing a part in dealing their organization a blow. Being paid 70 million dollars for completing the mission, he has no problem killing or manipulating anyone to reach his goal, and his lack of emotion at anything including murder showcases his complete LackOfEmpathy. He orders a remote-controlled machine gun built which he then tests on the guy he hired to build a mount for it, blowing off his arm before tearing him down completely. With the authorities on his tail, he seduces a gay man to infiltrate the country and casually shoots him when the man sees his face on the news. When he learns that the FBI enlisted the help of an atoning former IRA militant to catch him, he tries to execute the man's old flame to prove that he can't protect those he loves, but ends up killing several agents instead. When his plan is foiled he tries to escape with a hostage before he's finally killed.
