"These two people worked again together later", not hindsight, and not hilarious

** Vin Diesel provided the voice for another GentleGiant, [[Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy albeit a wooden one this time]]. Groot's story even mirrors the HeroicSacrifice and an ending scene that shows the character being revived afterwards. Bonus points in that Doc Kane, the ''exact same sound engineer'' who recorded him as the Giant, was used to record Diesel's performance for Groot.
** In addition, the Superman references become ironic as Christopher [=McDonald=], who plays Kent Mansley, had voiced Superman's father Jor-El in ''WesternAnimation/SupermanTheAnimatedSeries'' as well as ''WesternAnimation/JusticeLeague Unlimited'' and later a middle-aged Superman in ''WesternAnimation/BatmanBeyond''. Similarly, in the Brazilian dub, Mansley is voiced by Creator/GuilhermeBriggs, who would later come to voice Superman in almost all of the character's appearances starting in 2001.
** While the Iron Giant is flying after discovering his foot thrusters, he encounters fighter jets that pursue and shoot at him. In order to shake two that are right on his tail, he reverses thrust in midair to "brake", causing the two jets to fly past him and lose visual contact. Nine years later, another [[{{Film/IronMan1}} Iron Man]] who uses foot thrusters to fly finds himself pursued and attacked by fighter jets. With two jets on his tail, he also employs a "braking" strategy to get them to fly past him and lose visual contact.

An Ass Pull is a moment when the writers pull a narrative development out of thin air in a less-than-graceful fashion. Annie comes home and while looking for Hogarth, the lights go out, she then realizes Hogarth is not in the house. At the time she would have been heading for the truck, the Giant was still caught in the power-lines and sparking up a storm. Given that the substation is within walking distance of their house Annie would have likely seen this. The sparks and the power outage would have given Annie a place to start looking and we do see her driving up the access road that leads straight to the substation. Agreed that this is speculation, but it is within the facts presented in the story and would seem to keep it from being a complete ass pull.

* AssPull:
** It's one heck of a coincidence that Annie was able to find Hogarth by the power station after she realized that he wasn't at home. There's hardly any information for her to go on that she would find him there.
** Dean's realization about the Giant's reaction to Hogarth's toy gun can come off like this. Dean looks up just as the Giant finishes his first eye-blast at Hogarth and as he tackles him to avoid the second blast he saw that Hogarth was pointing his gun at the Giant. However, it requires a considerable deductive leap for Dean to conclude that the Giant was only reacting defensively to the gun.

** When the Giant is driven to his RageBreakingPoint, he unleashes his advanced weaponry onto the army in a CurbStompBattle. It was meant to be an homage to the invincible alien weapons of 1950s sci-fi films especially Film/TheWarOfTheWorlds1953. Unfortunately, some fans focused too much on the awesome display of firepower and neglected to take in the aftermath of the rampage which included a lot of collateral damage, some inevitable soldier casualties as tanks were tossed into the air without showing soldiers escaping, and the near destruction of an entire battleship and her crew. The battle was intended to be impressive, but the underlying message was still "guns kill".

* HeartwarmingInHindsight: When the Giant reads Hogarth's Superman comics, he grows to idolize him because of his heroics such that his last words before he stops the nuke is "Superman". Come 2022, and the trailer for ''VideoGame/MultiVersus'' shows the Iron Giant actually meeting his idol, Superman. Unfortunately, subsequent press releases have made it unclear if the Giant featured in the game is actually the same Giant from the movie.

* HeartwarmingInHindsight: zig-zagged. When flying to stop the nuke and recalling Hogath telling him "you are who you choose to be", the Giant utters his last words "Super...man". In 2022, a trailer is released for a new online game ''VideoGame/MultiVersus'', a player-verses-player fighting game featuring various Creator/WarnerBros characters beating the snot out of each other. Just as the trailer shows the Man of Steel flying into frame saying "This looks like a job for ..." it cues the Iron Giant flying in beside him to finish the phrase with "Super...man". It is a truly touching moment to see the Giant finally meet his hero. Unfortunately, as the trailer ends, it quickly sinks in that this a fighting game and the Giant will be functioning as a gun in the various battles fighting other characters with his cool weaponry. It's not helped by official press releases that try to justify the situation by saying the game takes place in an alternate universe where the Giant isn't a pacifist (yet somehow still idolizes Superman) and essentially ignores those aspects of the Giant's personality that don't fit the game mechanics.

The trailer is staged to trigger the Heartwarming In Hindsight trope better as they go out of their way to make the Giant's vocalization of "Super...man" in the trailer match his vocalization in the movie. They were clearly going for the heartstrings.

I admit, I teared up when I saw the trailer and the awesome, cool moment when the Iron Giant flies in and gets to meet his idol. That part is very nicely done, but unfortunately the way the press releases have been handling the poor explanation of why the Giant would be OK with fighting in the first place have shown they don't really care about the Giant and his story, beyond being a recognizable piece of Warner Bros intellectual property with high nostalgia value.

This is a stretch. While there are a few broad sweep similarities between the two, the differences make it quite clear that they aren't the same story ie "hulking, grey rage monster" vs "boy and his giant robot learning about souls".

** It could also be considered one to the earliest run of ''ComicBook/TheIncredibleHulk'', with Hogarth as the Rick Jones to the Giant's Hulk (with Mansley and Rogard potentially comparable to Glenn Talbot and a more reasonable General Ross). The two also have similar Cold War themes and scenes of the army pursuing the creature, plus the one scene of the Giant practically HulkingOut in rage and retaliating.

The movie's financial flop was because Warner was shutting down its animation department even as Bird was trying to get it completed. It had virtually no marketing upon it's release. Warner corrected that mistake by the time the VCR release was ready. They improved the marketing and the video release did much better.
