Throughout the movie, it's quite apparent that Mansley's signature smugness and coldness are really just a way for him to hide his flaws; whenever his composure is lost (which happens a lot), we can see that not only is he a rather neurotic man, he's also absurdly [[DirtyCoward cowardly]], gets [[ButtMonkey openly mocked by his superiors]], gets rather [[AxCrazy angry]] sometimes, and has a thing for [[BrownNote shitting his pants]] at inopportune times.

** The deer in the forest and Hogarth's explanation of the concept of death to the Giant is also quite depressing.
** The ending where [[spoiler: the Giant is piecing himself back together bit by bit after being blown up is a Tear Jerker of the [[TearsOfJoy joyful]] kind]].

* CompleteMonster: Kent Mansley, [[spoiler:who is willing to nuke the town just to get some personal glory]].
** Not really willing to [[spoiler:nuke the ''town'' per se, more the Giant itself]], though that ''was'' for personal glory. He's definitely a DirtyCoward though, as he tries to run away and save his own skin after it becomes clear [[spoiler:the missle will hit the town]].
** It's easy to miss, but watch Rogard's and Mansley's faces when Anne tells them that Hogarth has run out to the Giant. Rogard looks horrified, while Mansley just looks [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBlweHRITsA&feature=player_detailpage#t=199s bothered that something is in the way.]]
