** Peach is voiced by then-popular J-pop singer Mami Yamase. The fact that she's an idol and not an actress is apparent, and not helping is the fact that she makes the seemingly adult princess sound like a petulant, nasally ten year old (although this could be somewhat excused, as when the movie came out in 1986, Yamase was only 16 years old). Before you ask, she retired in 1990 to focus on a culinary career.

From what I've seen, the ending isn't really divisive, as pretty much most Mario fans utterly hate the ending thanks to that Prince and the Ship Sinking of Mario/Peach.

* BrokenBase: The ending. Some people don't mind that , finding it to be a clever (if abrupt) subversion of the common trope. Others were absolutely furious since the revelation came out of nowhere, as well as Mario/Peach being near-canon in the gamesPart of this is due to the time period the film was released in. Mario and Peach's relationship was more platonic until the early to mid 1990s starting with Super Mario World, when more emphasis was put on their ShipTease.

It doesn't because meta examples are not allowed.

* SugarWiki/AwesomeMoments: Meta example, but Kineko Video's treatment totally deserves a mention here. For many years, fans have had to rely on low-quality VHS rips if they wanted to see this movie. In 2021, however, these guys managed to attain what may be the very last surviving film print EVER (the original negatives themselves may as well be gone completely), and words can't describe the love and care that went into restoring. And if that's not enough, they even got a rip of the film's soundtrack album (keep in mind that ONLY 50 COPIES of the album were made, and only on LP). Seriously, we all oughta tip our hats for their out-of-this-world efforts.

* SoOkayItsAverage: While it's generally considered a much better adaptation of the Mario franchise than the 1993 film (if only for how incredibly InNameOnly it was), as a standalone movie it's considered fairly by-the-book and without much in the way of plot beyond its standard DamselInDistress outline and Literature/AlicesAdventuresInWonderland-inspired setup. It still gets a good deal of recognition from Mario fans for its historical importance (being not just one of the first video game movies ever made, along with the Star Soldier film released the same day, but also a source of inspiration for a number of elements in later games, most notably the Bowser fights in VideoGame/SuperMario64 and Bowser's characterization as being hopelessly in love with Peach), it's just considered somewhat mediocre when examined on its own terms.
