* FridgeHorror: IneffectualSympatheticVillain though he may be, one shudders to imagine what dastardly plans Dan Backslide had for Dora after he kidnapping her. Was he simply going to hold her for ransom, or were his intentions even more sinister? And why was he creeping up behind her ''after'' he'd already abducted her? We should thankful that Dora is a PintSizedPowerhouse and Dan is, well, [[BoisterousWeakling Dan]].

* {{Fanon}}: Pretty much everyone seems to agree that the Runabout Dan "steals" is actually ''his'' Runabout. Not only does this explain the fact that it inexplicably has an outfit that fits him perfectly in the trunk, but it also speaks to his status as an IneffectualSympatheticVillain (he's so bad at being evil [[EpicFail that he can't even properly steal something]])

fixed a few mistakes

** Although the titular Dover Boys are described as having “ uncompromising moral fortitude”, many of their actions in the short are… questionable: they all dive into a BadGuyBar during a game of Hide-and-Seek, refuse to pay a postman (even trampling the poor guy in the process), burst through a door to save Dora even though she was ‘’standing right behind it'', and beat up the now incapacitated Dan. They’re either IdiotHeroes or Anti-Heroes with good publicity.

** The idea that Dora is ObfuscatingStupidity is teased at one point in the [=ReAnimated=] version – after knocking Dan over a second time, she [[FreezeFrameBonus briefly]] glances at him with a smug expression.

*** The Narrator hints at it too, almost calling the three brothers “jerks” before [[VerbalBackspace correcting himself]].

** To be fair, Dan Backslide had just drank about a bottle's worth of booze, [[AlcoholInducedIdiocy so he might be acting even dumber than usual]] and forgot it was actually his own vehicle he was "stealing".

If this is the intended reaction, then it’s not “alternate.” It’s literally the joke of the cartoon.

** The Dover boys, in spite of their upstanding nature and heroic antics, are bland, self-righteous, and [[LastSecondWordSwap almost]] called "jerks" by the LemonyNarrator. Conversely, Dan Backslide (coward-bully-cad-and-thief) is an IneffectualSympatheticVillain you can't help but [[JerkassWoobie feel sorry for]]. Of course, [[GreyAndGrayMorality this is encouraged]] [[IntendedAudienceReaction by the cartoon itself]], [[RuleOfFunny for humor]].

** Some believe that the runabout stolen by Dan Backslide was actually his. Evidence for this is how [[ContrivedCoincidence its color not only matches that of his, but inside it are clothes that perfectly fit him, which he instantly goes for and puts on without a moment's hesitation, he gets the car running right away as if he's done such a thing before, and it just so happens to be parked right at the location where he's currently presiding]]. The fact that [[IneffectualSympatheticVillain Dan is such a horribly inept villain]] lends credence to the idea that he would do such a thing, [[StupidEvil whether it's due to his stupidity]], or just him wanting to pretend he's successfully pulled off a crime. Noticeably, right before stealing it, he loudly calls attention to his crime, [[AttentionWhore almost as if he wants everyone to think he's some kind of impressive thief]] [[KarmaHoudini who can steal a car with no repercussions]]. Of course it's worth noting that this scene isn't the only time he loudly shouts info that should be kept to himself. It's still definitely some food for thought.
