At first it seems that it is because of the huge technological gap but when it's revealed [[spoiler: Queen Chrysalis has been in control of Equestria for almost two months and took Celestia's form]], its likely that she purposely left the Guard unprepared and sent them to be slaughtered so [[spoiler: her Changeling army could take Equestria unopposed]] when all is said and done.
