Dead link. Belongs on the spoony page anyway.

* MemeticMutation: [[WebVideo/TheSpoonyExperiment Spoony's]] infamous [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFye3Ic7m1w "Betrayal"]] reaction to the games initial announcement.

* VindicatedByHistory: A mild example. In spite of the TroubledProduction and the game's mixed reviews at launch, nowadays it's liked by a significant subsection of the XCOM fandom and you often see affectionate references to it, even if nobody thinks it's a "lost classic" or anything. It helps that with the benefit of hindsight and two well-loved "proper" XCOM games, it's become a [[OddballInTheSeries fun, retro sidestory in a different genre]] rather than the [[InNameOnly in-name-only recycling of the XCOM name]] it could have been.

Authors Saving Throw require Word Of God and/or Word of Saint Paul. Also, Flame Bait example are forbidden.

* AuthorsSavingThrow: After the not-so positive reaction to the FPS reboot, finally announcing and focusing their marketing much more heavily on a strategy game that's faithful to the original style by Firaxis Games (with many of the staff that worked on the originals at Microprose in the dev team) seems to be this. It helps that the FPS was delayed into ''2013'', and it was {{Retcon}}ned to be set in the past of the XCOM universe, derailing its status as a ContinuityReboot.

* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: The initial reaction to the games announcement. The release of ''VideoGame/XCOMEnemyUnknown'' won back the crowd, but that's another story.

* WhatAnIdiot: Faulke's decision [[spoiler: to reconnect the Infiltrator to Mosaic. Granted, they were able to find Origin, but at the cost of well, ''everything inside the base''.]]

* PortingDisaster: If you're on PC and don't have an Nvidia graphic cards, expect the game to barely run better than a slideshow. Even on completely optimum hardware that's several years more current than the game itself, it can still turn into a slideshow in certain areas (the university campus is one of the earliest offenders) if you don't have the right graphics settings disabled.

* SoOkayItsAverage: Generally seen as at least enjoyable, but definitely inferior to other games in the genre such as ''Franchise/MassEffect''
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: The initial reaction to the games announcement. The release of ''VideoGame/XCOMEnemyUnknown'' seems to have dulled this somewhat.
** Ironically, when ''The Bureau'' was revealed, some gamers complained about the removal of investigation aspects, alteration of gameplay to make it play like a low-budget ''Videogame/MassEffect1'' knockoff, and alteration of enemies to make it more like ''Enemy Unknown''.

Not YMMV

* PlotHole: [[spoiler: Reconnecting the infiltrator into Mosaic to learn the position of the Outsiders' mothership reveals the XCOM base to them as well. Said infiltrator had been walking inside the base before Carter joined in disguise as a researcher, linked to the Mosaic all the time until Carter apprehended it. How come the aliens didn't elect to blow the XCOM right away?]]
** Because they had larger concerns - it was only after learning that [[spoiler: the other Ethereal was in the base that the aliens attacked in force]].

* RevivalByCommercialization: The trailer has renewed peoples interest of "Stompy Jones - Don't lie to me".

* ViralMarketing:
** The live-action trailers, amping up the UnPerson and ConvenientlyInterruptedDocument tropes used in the promotional images even further. Which gets rather disturbing at times.
** The ''Project: Enemy Unknown'', ''Citizen Skywatch'', and ''Erase The Truth'' [=ARGs=], all of which follow a common thread.
** And now there's a [[http://hungoverx.com/ tie-in browser not-quite-game]] which approaches "viral" from a different direction.
