** "Reptiles in the Rose Garden:" Mario accidentally sending the White House crashing on top of the Washington Monument became less funny when an earthquake affected said monument in 2011.

Twelve years later, [[VideoGame/SuperMarioSunshine Bowser Jr.]] was introduced as "Bowser's son" and caused some contention among fans as to whether or not he was related to the Koopalings, or if he had even flat-out replaced them. Ten years after ''that'', Miyamoto outright stated that Bowser Jr. was Bowser's only child, and that the Koopalings were not his children.

** "Kootie Pie Rocks" (the aforementioned Music/MilliVanilli episode) is full of these. Specifically, the scene where they tell Kootie Pie they can't sing without the rest of the band. Their subsequent attempt to wing it (with Mario and crew) sends everyone running away screaming.
*** There's also Milli Vanilli [[TakeThat throwing shade]] at ''Music/TheBeatles''. Suffice to say, ''that'' little display of hubris lost its sting pretty fast.
*** Several years after Milli Vanilli's guest appearance, ''VideoGame/MarioParty 4'' had a minigame called "Blame It On the Crane".
*** Luigi refers to the tuxes he, Mario, and Toad are wearing as "these dumb [[VideoGame/NewSuperMarioBrosWii penguin suits]]!"
** The wrestling-themed episode "Tag Team Trouble" becomes this since [[Series/TheSuperMarioBrosSuperShow Mario was formerly played by a professional wrestler.]]

** In "Mush-Rumors", the entire Mushroom Kingdom thought they were under an alien attack. Then came [[VideoGame/MarioAndLuigiPartnersInTime the Shroobs]].
** In "Super Koopa", we see King Koopa using the game's power-ups, including the Raccoon Suit. Over twenty years later, the False Bowsers in ''VideoGame/SuperMario3DLand'' are depicted with raccoon tails, and in ''VideoGame/SuperMario3DWorld'', Bowser uses power-ups against Mario and friends.
** Tracey Moore and Harvey Atkin would work together only a few years later on WesternAnimation/TheAdventuresOfSamAndMaxFreelancePolice with Tracey's character being a red haired girl and Harvey's being a humanoid animal.
** In "Misadventures in Babysitting", some Boos sneak up on Luigi and he scares them away by making a scary face. Since Luigi's fear of ghosts has been one of his main character traits since ''VideoGame/LuigisMansion'', this can come off as a BaitAndSwitch OutOfCharacterMoment.
** In “7 Continents for 7 Koopas”, Kootie Pie turns all the pictures in the Louvre into pictures of herself, and one of the paintings she inserts herself in is Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus”. Years later, ''VideoGame/PaperMarioColorSplash'' shows Wendy (her video game counterpart) [[TheBurlesqueOfVenus coming out of a shell and posing in a way very similar to “The Birth of Venus”.]]
** The plot of "The Beauty of Kootie" is quite similar to [[VideoGame/NewSuperMarioBrosU Peachette]] and its subsequent meme JustForFun/{{Bowsette}}.
*** That same episode has Kootie Pie/Wendy tricking Mario into falling in love with her. Years later, ''VideoGame/PaperMarioColorSplash'' would reveal that Wendy has a crush on Mario.
