* AudienceAlienatingEra: For many, Smosh entered a nearly decade long decline following the brands acquisition by ''Defy Media'' in 2013. While their content from 2014-early 2015 was largely seen as good, around roughly late 2015 opinions on their content became more split. The increased focus on the divisive "Smosh Squad", the overabundance of "WebVideo/EveryBlankEver" videos, the ending of their popular "WebVideo/FoodBattle" series, an increase in political commentary in their videos, their controversial BigDamnMovie, and the eventual departure of Anthony from the brand in 2017, after feeling Defy Media was stifling the channel's creativity. This would reach an apex when Defy Media went under, with ''WebVideo/SmoshGames'' opting not to rejoin the group as full-time members, before eventually leaving entirely. After being bought by WebVideo/RhettAndLink and given much more creative freedom, their subscriber count and viewership would end up dropping substantially, with many newer videos being flooded with comments about how "old Smosh was better". This would only come to an end when, in early 2023, Smosh made the surprise announcement that Anthony would be returning to the group, and that he and Ian had bought back Smosh from WebVideo/RhettAndLink, with many videos both old and new being flooded with comments about how "Smosh was good again" now that they're RevisitingTheRoots.

Complaining-filled example about people in IRL that uses Weasel Words and argues with itself.

* DesignatedHero: The two of them can be seen as this in their Pokémon Theme Song Revenge video. For starters, it can be interpreted as a giant TakeThat towards the Pokémon company for an incident that happened years prior, and that the company was entirely allowed to do.[[labelnote: Explanation]](They filed a copyright claim on Smosh's old music video for the Pokémon theme song; as the song in question was straight-up the one from the anime, rather than a remix or parody, this was within the company's legal rights).[[/labelnote]] For another, they constantly try to justify their video with lines like "You don't know the law!" and "It was a parody!" - which, as stated in the parentheses, is not exactly the case. And to top it off, they outright taunt the company, declaring "Try to sue us now!" as the chorus. Again, bearing in mind that all happened many years before and they're now among the most popular web content producers, it just comes off as them holding an endless grudge and whining about it with no knowledge of how copyright and fair use actually works, [[{{Irony}} yet claiming the Pokémon company is the one that doesn't know how it works]], and trying to make the company look bad for no real reason. But because of the special effects and good music, not to mention that this came out around the time [=YouTube=] copyright claims were universally considered to be flawed and never taken seriously, everyone takes Ian and Anthony as the good guys and continues to denounce Pokémon to this day.
** That being said, the jury is out on whether it was meant as a serious TakeThat, as the video has a hilariously simplistic depiction of both Youtube and the Pokémon Company to the point of self-parody, and Smosh are clearly still fans of Pokémon to this day that don't seem to take much offense to the copyright claim. Smosh don't tend to take themselves too seriously, and many of their videos are [[StylisticSuck purposefully exaggerated]].
