* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: Julia and Sephiroth.

* WhatAnIdiot:
** Despite both of them earning a lot of money, Sephiroth and Julia chose to live for ''five years'' with the insane, abusive professor Hojo instead of moving out and finding a place of their own.
** Julia staying with her abusive biological family (two unenhanced, normal humans), even though she was apparently very skilled at combat (having taught basic combat to ''herself'') and possessing several materia such as Bolt and ChocoMog, which she's had since she was six, meaning that she was an experienced caster. There is no reason why someone like her wouldn't just run away and try to make it back to her foster family in Mideel, where Tseng would have helped her hide in case her biological family came back looking for her.
** Julia and Sephiroth's double rape under Jenova's influence could have been averted if Julia had been smart enough to not enter Sephiroth's tent and instead send someone like Korokou to check up on him. Rather than do that, she enters his tent against his specific warnings and knowing that Jenova could take control of him and make him hurt her.
* TheWoobie:
** Sephirothslave ''tries'' to invoke this with both Sephiroth and Julia, but they are so incredibly unsympathetic and the writing is so bad that instead of making readers pity them, it ends up looking like the characters either deserved their punishment or were stupid enough to get themselves into the situation that led to it.
** Aerith is a straight example, her very first scene has her in tears after being bullied and covered in ink. Too bad no one cares about her at all, and they find her company abhorrent.

** Arguably, the entire series - and the Jenova Possession Theory in general - is to defend Sephiroth, stating that it was not his fault that he went crazy and tried to destroy the world. However, it fails this, by painting Sephiroth as psychopathic, mentally unstable, emotionally dependent on Julia, and outright vindictive and cruel. So instead of having a good man, who [[GoMadFromTheRevelation snapped under the truth,]] we have a jerk who wasn't responsible for trying to destroy the world, but willingly commits torture, genocide, and other equally abhorrent crimes.

* UnintentionallySympathetic: It's hard not to feel sorry for Cloud, as he is bullied and demeaned in every scene that he is in. Julia shoots a marble at his eye for no other reason than he was asleep before class, Reno snaps at him when he was trying to defuse a tense situation, sneakily cuts off so much of his hair that Cloud is left with a bald spot and leaves the cafeteria crying, and when Cloud is forced to join the military, Reno mocks his name, calls him an idiot and pulls the keycard that Cloud had somehow gotten stuck between his teeth so hard that it leaves a large gap. Nothing Cloud ever did or said invited such callous treatment. Cloud is openly hated by both the characters and the author, who obviously did not intend for him to appear as anything but pathetic.

* DarknessInducedAudienceApathy: Due to the appalling main characters pitted against the villains and the CrapsackWorld they live in, this is bound to happen for some readers.
* DesignatedHero: Julia and Sephiroth perform outright atrocities and genocide, yet they are invariably considered the heroes.

* DracoInLeatherPants: Sephiroth of course. Bonus points for being a character who canonically wears leather pants. The entire story is focused on how wonderful a boyfriend he is, even though he's a rather lousy one, and defending his actions in the game.
** Tseng also gets this, but to a lesser degree.

* RonTheDeathEater: So much. Virtually any hero of the story gets trashed for being opposition to Sephiroth. Primarily we have

* BigBrotherInstinct: Arguably. Tseng, towards his foster sister Julia. Although the author describes him as being a loving brother, he is only mildly surprised when she turns up in his class years after she was kidnapped by her biological family and is never implied to have looked for her or worried about her during all this time. This is made worse by the horrible abuse that she suffered at their hands, which could have been prevented if someone as resourceful and intelligent as Tseng would have put his mind into finding her.
* BigBrotherWorship: Arguably. Julia loves Tseng and regards the time spent in his company as the happiest years of her life. She is overjoyed to have found him again by accident in Midgar, but forgets to visit him after class the very first day they meet again, in spite of his request. They are not shown to be particularly close, especially in Shinra High, and Julia makes no effort to spend time with him.

* DemotedToExtra: Yuffie and Tifa have a much smaller role in ''Shinra SOLDIER'', as they leave Midgar during the five year time skip and lose touch with Julia and Sephiroth. Yuffie pops up for the Wutai war and Tifa comes back to plan and attend Julia's wedding, but they both disappear afterwards.

* OccidentalOtaku: Julia claims to have a Japanese nickname (Megami), sometimes utters short phrases in Japanese, has two Japanese weapons (katana and naginata) and is delighted when her older brother decorates her bedroom in an oriental style. This is explained through her being raised by a family from Wutai, so she might have absorbed some aspects of the culture. This starts to have shades of TheFarmerAndTheViper later in the story, as she slaughters millions of Wutai people without hesitations or any moral dilemmas, and never once thinks that a Wutai family gave her, by her own admission, the most happiest years of her life.

* RealitySubtext: Much of what was happening in Sephirothslave's life at the time when she was writing the story can be glimpsed through the lines: her strained relationship with her parents (conservative Catholics who were disturbed by her open interest in the occult and her insistence that the dreams in which she was meeting Sephiroth were real) and her desire to escape them, the crush her friend Ian had on her, her growing interest in martial arts, her frustration with school and boys and ultimately, her chronic depression, isolation and suicide attempt.

* TakeThat: Those familiar with the author's personal life at the time the story was being written (as glimpsed from her journals and comments) can recognize that Sephirothslave inserted her parents in her story (keeping their real names) and portrayed them as horriblly abusive, especially her father, only to have them humiliated and in her father's case, extremely injured by Sephiroth.
** Aerith and Cloud are portrayed as universally disliked, a choice fueled by Sephirothslave's extreme dislike of them.

* UnfortunateImplications: Julia claims that her (abusive) biological father drove her gothic, which suggests that being Goth is a consequence of abuse.

** Tseng saying that "suicides are no one's fault but the one who died" when trying to assure Sephiroth that he was not responsible for Laura killing herself. Made worse by the fact that Tseng (a teacher and a character portrayed by the author in a positive light) knows nothing about the circumstances of the girl's death.

** Julia's relationship with Wutai is filled to the brim with this, due to the author forgetting her character's backstory. She was raised in Mideel by Tseng and his family, [[http://lian-hua.livejournal.com/47047.html who are stated to be from Wutai]]. However, later in the story she calls the people of Wutai heathens and [[http://lian-hua.livejournal.com/41574.html destroys their entire capital]], killing millions of soldiers and civilians in a horrible, genocidal slaughter. The thought that she might have extended family living there never crosses her mind, nor does she experience any kind of ethical dilemma. To twist the knife further, when she enters her new mansion shortly after the Wutai massacre, she is delighted to see that Tseng had decorated her bedroom in an [[http://lian-hua.livejournal.com/47047.html oriental theme]], with Wutai hanging lanterns and a carved dragon four poster bed... The author really liked Japan at the moment when she wrote the story, and her little bit of wishfulfillment turned into macabre irony because she forgot her own context.
** There are some instances in the stories which can be interpreted as homophobia:
*** Julia reacts to the suggestion that she might be gay as if it were a terrible insult. In fact, one of the biggest changes in the short lived rewrite attempt was her going ballistic when Reno calls her a dyke.

Sephirothslave would later write that she cried when she had to write his death scene, and her author's note found at the beginning of ''Silent Melody'' mentions bringing him back to life later in the story.
