* JumpTheShark - There's no doubt (at least from comments in this wiki) that the trope dropping, {{Shout Out}}s, and/or increasingly over-the-top nature of the story has caused some readers to hit this wall. For others, it's long since [[CrossesTheLineTwice Jumped It Twice]], and entered the realm of junkfood fic.

* CompleteMonster: Considering he's the DarkMessiah, it's no surprise that Kaworu fits this. He really doesn't show it until chapter 22 when he [[spoiler:plunges his fingers into a little girl's head and levels a facility of psychics in Russia.]]

* WhatMeasureIsANonhuman - Tackled by Rei and Kaworu. Kaworu, on the other hand, views himself neither as human or Angel but something completely different. [[spoiler:It doesn't stop him from falling in love with Asuka, though.]]
** Shinji actually has an interesting viewpoint on the whole issue of humanity, [[TabletopGame/{{Warhammer 40000}} especially given his influences]]. He basically believes that "humanity" belongs to anyone who is able to choose to be compassionate and work together rather than destroy.

* BetterThanCanon: It definitely explores the social and economic effects of Second Impact more deeply than canon...even using them to deal with some of the {{Zeerust}} inherited from its parent.

* OneTrueThreesome: {{Tenchi Solution}}s and {{Biker Babe}}s aside, plenty of women crave Shinji; [[spoiler:[[YouShouldKnowThisAlready Rei and Asuka]]]] complete him. Probably.

* HolyShitQuotient: So obvious that if you've read the main page and your jaw isn't firmly planted on the ground, you're either dead, or have become totally inoculated to the idea that there's ''nothing'' Shinji isn't capable of at least trying.

** Kaworu is a sympathetic character up to the point he [[spoiler:stabs Rei and helps Iruel turn the Earth's Cradle, the self-sufficient, fortified final bastion of humanity, into grade-A, militarized HighOctaneNightmareFuel]].

* GodModeSue: Bpen's made it clear that he's trying to avoid this; thus, while Shinji has [[{{Understatement}} additional powers]] (and more importantly, a backbone), he is still beatable, makes plenty of mistakes, and finds romance difficult. More importantly, of all the other {{Chessmaster}}s in the story, he's the only who does '''not''' want to ''become'' a god, and is growing more and more disenchanted with his power. Whether or not Bpen's succeeded (and [[TropesAreNotBad whether or not it really matters]]) is up to the reader.

* BetterThanItSounds: The world-changing plot point is Shinji discovering a [[TabletopGames tabletop game]]?

** Subverted at least a couple of times, such as the transition into the Javaal arc. Shinji has somehow gained the ability to psychically manufacture antimatter as a weapon, the power to crack the planet if he wanted to, and near invulnerable toughness...but since this outward expression of power keeps him from syncing with his Eva, he spends the entire arc trying to ''get rid'' of it.

* MagnificentBastard: Shinji, who eventually [[spoiler:gets Gendo fired and imprisoned by ''[[WoundedGazelleGambit punching himself in the face]]'']].

** ''[[FightClub "I am Jack's smirking revenge."]]'' ''Directly'' lifted...and only adding to his brilliance.

* MemeticMutation: "Pilot Sohryu, I am charging your laser." and "Halt!...Hammerzeit!"

** Gendo [[spoiler:executes Rei after she learns how to use her AT-field offensively outside of her Eva]].

* StopHavingFunGuys - Averted with Admiral Yang, who used to play a D&D campaign with his military advisors. Rei also averts this trope as she basically discovers the concept of fun when Shinji gives her a copy of the Ork codex, as well as [[spoiler:finding the time to write a movie]]. Played straight with Shinji, who realizes that this isn't one of his games or flights of fancy, and tends to take everything dead seriously.

* ThirtySuePileup: Shinji is PossessionSue, FixerSue, BlackHoleSue, and probably half a dozen others. '''HOWEVER...''' this fic is probably one of the greatest examples ''ever'' of why [[TropesAreNotBad Tropes (Yes, even Thirty Sue Pileup) Are Not Bad]].
** A successfully written Messiah Fic?
** YourMilageMayVary. Quite a lot of people see that above pile up as a really good reason to avoid this fic at all costs.

* {{Wangst}} - Happily averted as early as the prologue.

* CrazyAwesome: The fic starts out pretty placid, with just a few moments of awesome and a bit of crazy in the prologue, then steadily increases both. The latest chapters have so much of ''both'' that it rivals ''TengenToppaGurrenLagann'' at times.

* MoralEventHorizon: Gendo [[spoiler:executes Rei after she learns how to use her AT-field offensively outside of her Eva]]. Kaworu is a sympathetic character up to the point he [[spoiler:stabs Rei and helps Iruel turn the Earth's Cradle, the self-sufficient, fortified final bastion of humanity, into grade-A, militarized HighOctaneNightmareFuel]].

* [[YourMileageMayVary YMMV Trope Itself]] - When a {{fanfic}} is regarded by many as a [[{{Fanon}} canon unto itself]], the base set of circumstances are in place for at least the potential of heated exchanges on whether there's just something wrong with people who don't get it.
** And on the other end of the scale, precisely why anyone would read this in the first place.

* [[YourMileageMayVary YMMV]] - When a {{fanfic}} is regarded by many as a [[{{Fanon}} canon unto itself]], the base set of circumstances are in place for at least the potential of heated exchanges on even the applicability of the very trope itself.

* ShipToShipCombat: An in-universe example--Shinji's ''classmates'' [[ShipperOnDeck argue over who to ship him with]]: his high school hosts fan clubs devoted to the various possible love interests that can be quite militant in their disagreements.
