** The fact that the majority of the civilians appear to be completely okay with living under HYDRA's tyranny, and offer little to no opposition, to the point that the heroes starring the story seem to be literally the only ones who oppose them, has been widely ridiculed, especially as it seems to be an attempt at political satire. It's been pointed out multiple times that even in the most repressive real life societies, this doesn't happen, though others argue it's depressingly in-character for [[UngratefulTownsfolk Marvel civilians]].

Most people don't like Stevil and would rather he had been killed by the events end. Even this very page suggests nothing but hatred for him at worst, They Wasted A Perfectly Good Plot at best.

* DracoInLeatherPants: Nick Spencer attempted to defy this trope, but it's heavily failed thanks to Marvel's promotion - many fans actually quite ''like'' Steve like this as it's an interesting take on the character. It doesn't help that, despite Marvel trying to portray this as a good guy vs. bad guy event, a vast majority of the stories show the bad guys trumping the good guys. Being an event that extends well into August makes it even worse.

* DarknessInducedAudienceApathy: The main title is an 11-issue weekly-released mini-series. The tie-ins run on a mostly monthly basis with a handful being bimonthly. Despite being advertised as a "good guy vs. bad guy" event, the first month (which includes half of the mini-series) has essentially been "TheBadGuyWins: The Event" with only not even a handful of victories for the heroes. The BigGood of the Marvel Universe is a fascist leader and his LegacyCharacter replacement pulled a RageQuit. And, surprise, the citizens of the United States have once again decided they ''like'' the villains ruling over them outside of a handful. If the idea of Steve Rogers being a fascist ruling America hasn't turned you off, the complete DownerBeginning of the first month throughout all titles will. Worse yet, Nick Spencer is adamant that the usual tropes that could solve this problem ''will not'' be used to end this (although on the press release linked below on "Internet Backdraft" Marvel Comics actually had to cave in and spoil the arc by insisting that Captain America ''will'' go back to be a hero (somehow) and save the day... and this they said in an attempt to convince people to stop burning issues). Finally, the Nazi comparisons and the event being written and released during a particularly turbulent time in American politics where GodwinsLaw was thrown around ([[Administrivia/RuleOfCautiousEditingJudgment though we will not discuss whether or not it has justification]]) did not help it at all. The revelation in Champions #11 that [=HYDRA=] used a microwave weapon to literally cook hundreds of innocent people during the razing of Las Vegas, ultimately roasting those people alive, contributed to this as well. When ''ComicBook/{{Ultron}}'' himself no longer cares about destroying humanity because he believes they are doing a good job at it themselves, you know things are bad.

* InternetBackdraft:
** ''Secret Empire'' has been target of websites and fans for allegedly retconning the nature of the Marvel Universe and/or Steve Rogers at first. What many of the critics seem to miss is that the reveal is only done by [[spoiler: Steve Rogers and Elisa Sinclair - already established to be UnreliableNarrator in the narrative since they're respectively manipulated by Kobik and a creation of Kobik. Nobody else in-universe acknowledges their view as true - not even Baron Zemo.]]
** A series featuring villains aligned with Cap had a variant cover with ComicBook/{{Magneto}} on it. Given that Magneto is a Holocaust survivor and has long opposed HYDRA for their connections to the Nazis, it's not really hard to see why several fans didn't take kindly to this. [[spoiler:Neither did they when it was revealed that Scarlet Witch (a Romani) was part of Rogers' super-powered-SecretPolice "Avengers".]]
** [[spoiler: The [=FCBD=] Secret Empire issue ends with Hydra Cap lifting Mjolnir easily, as if deemed worthy by the Hammer]], which only led to more protest and frustration for some people.
** One of Marvel's plans to promote ''Secret Empire'' involved handing out promotional materials to comic book shops that include HYDRA T-shirts for staff of these shops to wear. Like everything else connected to the story, it's been met by fans and retailers vehemently opposing the ad campaign due to what they perceive as Marvel essentially asking comic shops to dress up as Nazis to promote the story.
** On a lesser note, Nick Spencer tweeted that Secret Empire #0 was the best selling comic for its month. People who follow comic sales had a [[https://www.bleedingcool.com/2017/05/08/not-batman-21-actually-outsell-secret-empire-0-flash-21/ field]] [[http://screenrant.com/secret-empire-marvel-sales-dc-comic/?utm_source=SR-DCEU&utm_medium=Facebook-Distribution&utm_campaign=SR-DCEU&view=list day]] with this, noting that both ''ComicBook/{{Batman|Rebirth}}'' #21 and ''Franchise/TheFlash'' #21 (Parts 1 and 2 of ''ComicBook/TheButton'') beat it, because ''Secret Empire'' won on a technicality, and not one that's hard to see at that -- the lenticular covers for those DC issues were considered different items, but added to the sales of the non-lenticular covers, ''both'' issues outsold ''Secret Empire''.
** You know that the backdraft is pretty bad [[http://www.comicsbeat.com/marvel-pleads-for-readers-to-wait-until-the-end-of-secret-empire-to-pass-judgement/ when Marvel itself sends out an official news statement that pretty much asks people to stop and at least wait until the arc is over before passing judgment]] because people are '''burning their issues or tossing them in the trash''' in protest. The irony being that comics are a periodical medium, therefore it is commonplace to judge it piecemeal to begin with, and that the Hydra Cap story had been going on for a year by the time of Marvel's press release.
** Nick Spencer caused another small backdraft when he began blocking anyone who didn't praise Secret Empire on Twitter. While some said this was his right others pointed out that it came off as being thin skinned (something he's been accused of before).
*** Spencer also got a lot of flak for claiming Secret Empire was the most ambitious comic event ever due to its bimonthly timetable. Fans instantly began pointing to DC's Year Long Weekly Event Comics, including ComicBook/FiftyTwo which came out ten years prior, as having a more grueling time table.
** Secret Empire has the infamy of ultimately becoming the second worst selling major Marvel event in the last 10 years, something many fans are quick to bring up when discussing it.

** Initially, the explanation was that the Supreme Leader was ''the'' Captain America that fans had always known, but corrupted into a fascist monstrosity, while the Cap that appears to stop him at the conclusion was a "remnant" constructed from Kobik's memories of the original. There was no indication the Cube had any influence on his decision . Which is why Hydra Cap did not use the cube to sway the other heroes to follow him into joining Hydra. It did not have the power to do that. So Spider man choice to remain a hero and not a killer was his own

** Even worse, apparently that same cube was the reason Spider-Man did not kill Captain-America, not because he does not want to be a killer.

The irony is that Spencer and Alonso [[https://www.kotaku.com.au/2017/04/marvel-would-like-you-to-know-captain-americas-turn-to-fascism-has-little-to-do-with-politics/ claimed]] that this story was not meant to be read as political. [[RuleOfCautiousEditingJudgement [[Administrivia/RuleOfCautiousEditingJudgment And that is all that needs to be said about that]].

Finally, the Nazi comparisons and the event being written and released during a particularly turbulent time in American politics where GodwinsLaw was thrown around ([[RuleOfCautiousEditingJudgment though we will not discuss whether or not it has justification]]) did not help it at all.

No inferred if the mention it. Not YMMV, and needs more than one side.

* BrokenAesop:
** A story about the consequences of trusting in a single heroic man ends with... the heroes all trusting in a single heroic man to save the day.
** Hydra Captain America's fascist actions being treated as AndThatsTerrible becomes so since both Iron Man and Captain Marvel in ''Civil War 1'' and ''2'' respectively were not given repercussions and were even supported by the public. While ReasonYouSuckSpeech (by Ultron!Pym himself) and regrets over their actions were given for these issues, but it ended up as ShowDontTell.
** People having to deal with the damage they cause, which is why [[spoiler: Kobik leaves the world in ruin]], doesn't really work considering that the damage only ''existed in the first place'' because of the reactions to Hydra Cap. Really, it seems more like a case of [[spoiler: Kobik]] trying to pass the blame around.

** Fans of the Scarlet Witch are also not pleased that she's being mind-controlled to be a bad guy ''again,'' especially after having gone through an arc in her own book about the many times she's been mind controlled to attack the Avengers and taking steps against it happening again. Increasingly, it seems that this is the only way many writers know how to write Wanda.
** The ending for two points (especially because Spencer pretty much boasted that he would ''not'' be using "[[DeusExMachina easy ways]]" to solve the problem):
*** Hydra Cap is defeated [[spoiler: by Sam Wilson (the last minority hero left after the rest are wiped away by Hydra Cap) kneeling before him, proclaiming 'Hail Hydra' and giving Steve the final cube shard only to reveal that Ant-Man and Bucky were shrunk on it and they enter the cube, saving Kobik and the memory of Steve, who defeats Hydra Steve. This bothers some since, in other words, the main black hero kneels before a Nazi after all other non-white heroes are removed from the universe and then wait for three white men to save the day. Others feel that this development had nothing to do with race, instead claiming that mainly using Bucky and the memory of Steve made perfect sense, character-wise, and that Sam's deception played the biggest part in undoing Hydra Cap.]]
*** When the comic first came out both the writer and [=EiC=] proclaimed they wouldn't use the Cosmic Cube to undo what happened. [[spoiler: Kobik undoes almost everything that happened, creating a new Cap, undoing all that Hydra did to alter history, and saving all the minority heroes. While Black Widow and Rick Jones remain dead and all the battle damage in Las Vegas remains, Kobik hand waves away almost everything else]]
*** [[spoiler: In addition to that, the fact that it ended with the original Cap miraculously coming back to defeat Hydra Cap has caused some discontent, with some saying it is a cop-out just to keep Cap's hands clean and not have him really atone for anything (the official press release on "Internet Backdraft" below swore that Cap was going to be the hero of the day... people obviously thought that he was going to do a HeelFaceTurn ''somehow''). Now, he can just blame it on the other Cap. However, some state it was really the only way to end the story.]]

* CluelessAesop: The writer occasionally claims that Secret Empire is trying to tell a story about creeping fascism but the fact that everything in the story is ultimately at the whim of Kobik makes it hard for the message to hit home for many.
* ContinuitySnarl: In issues 7 and 8, there is the focus of Miles Morales' potentially murdering Steve Rogers in front of the Capitol building, predicted by Ulysses. Miles is convinced [[BecauseDestinySaysSo that he MUST be there at the Capitol]] even after being locked up by Widow, so it doesn't matter what the password is; he will make it. Tony later claims that all the visions that Ulysses had, this one was the ONLY one that did not come to pass. Yet this is completely contradictory to Civil War II, where Tony pointed out that Ulysses' visions were NOT accurate and ultimately "guesswork", meaning that there was no guarantee of anything.

** Frank Castle's allegiance to [=HYDRA=] was a significant plot point in Secret Empire 3, and it looked like he too would be used to flesh out the villain side--especially since his morally ambiguous nature puts him in a position where he could more plausibly accept [=HYDRA's=] arguments than other heroes that could have been used for the same purpose. He had no significant contribution besides losing a fight to Black Widow in issue 7, and by Secret Empire Omega, has turned on [=HYDRA=] while bluntly dismissing his prior actions as a "Big mistake". This has led many to accuse Spencer of derailing the Punisher's character merely to anger his fans, as he didn't affect the story on any significant way.

Unfortunate Implications requires a citation. Also never seen anyone feel bad about Sally Floyd. If anything people in reddit and other websites clamored for the burn Steve gave her. Also HYDRA was claimed to have fought the war alongside the Nazis. In Secret Empire: Omega it was revealed that the Steve that returned was the real one too.
