* DieForOurShip: Subverted with Sasha. Despite being a {{Expy}} of Saori, she manages to avoid this for being a NiceGirl, a good ActionGirl (while Saori was always unluckily put in the DamselInDistress position and got hated for being a DamselScrappy) and her relationships with the Saints are at most LikeBrotherAndSister. That's why in slash fanfics, Sasha usually ends up in the YaoiFangirl position.

* TearJerker: This! Is! SAINT SEIYA!... after all. So the torrent of ManlyTears is pretty much a given.
** One of the first is [[spoiler:Pisces Albafica's last stand and death against Griffin Minos]]. In fact, it is hard not to sob throughout [[spoiler:Capricorn El Cid's final scenes. Actually, make that all of the currently dead Gold Saints' final moments, with special mentions to Taurus Aldebaran, Cancer Manigoldo, Scorpio Kardia, Virgo Asmita]]... hell, all of them. It's all tragic. [[ForegoneConclusion Damn series premise!]]
** But the one that takes the cake is [[spoiler:Unicorn Yato]].

** Pegasus Tenma is considered as being far better written than Seiya by many fans. Compared to Seiya, his Hot-Blooded and IdiotHero tendencies are toned down considerably - the two qualities that made Seiya rather widely hated by the audience - and he gets bonus points for having a more cheerful and more rational attitude.

* HilariousInHindsight: In the [[Manga/SaintSeiya original series]], the last chapters has Seiya being amazed by Hades' true form and complimented on his [[WhatBeautifulEyes sad but beautiful eyes.]] This series takes that UpToEleven by not only having Tenma and Alone best friends, but also portraying Alone as having [[SingleTargetSexuality romantic feelings]] for Tenma and being completely obsessed with him.

** Rhadamanthys' PlotArmor is thicker than an iceberg, as he survive trough attacks that would kill any other character in the series. [[spoiler:Even after being hit by the Zodiac Exclamation (listed above), and having his body split in half (vertically, meaning that his brain was also split in two) by Alone, he still menages to carry Pandora to safety before finally dying.]] He must be harder to kill than Seiya himself.

** Pandora. You either like her for being sexy and a strong woman, or hate her because her attitude toward Athena's Saints and Athena herself is [[{{Jerkass}} rather... unpleasant.]] [[spoiler: To her credits, though, she [[TookALevelInKindness gets a lot better]] after joining with Tenma to defeat Partita.]]

* EvenBetterSequel: For many Saint Seiya fans, ''The Lost Canvas'' is an improvement from the original (which is also a good show) in every possible way. It does help that it improves on some flaws the original had, give focus to more characters, and avoid the overused "Rescue the Goddess" plot.

** Aiacos full stop. He sacrifices each of his underlings just to prove they are tools.
** Yoma is not only sacrificing his family to grant his own wish he also made two brothers kill each other for no reason other than having fun.
* {{Narm}}: ''Alone's name''. While the series can sometimes get silly with the characters names, the fact Alone best friends are named [[AerithAndBob Sasha and Tenma]] just brings to question how no one [[WrongGenreSavvy noticed he would turn into a villain]]. Due to this, some fans [[FanonDiscontinuity pretend he is named]] Aaron.

* BetterThanCanon: Many fans prefer this series over ''[[Manga/SaintSeiyaNextDimension the canon prequel manga]]'', which uses a similar setting. It probably has to do with the fact that Next Dimension has a much more cliched [[RecycledScript and predicable storytelling]] with less likable characters than this very well-written series.

* {{Narm}}: ''Alone's name''.

* BetterThanCanon: Many fans prefer this series over ''[[Manga/SaintSeiyaNextDimension the canon prequel manga]], which uses a similar setting. It probably has to do with the fact that Next Dimension has a much more cliched [[RecycledScript and predicable storytelling]] with less likable characters than this very well-written series.

* LauncherOfAThousandShips: Let's see, you can ship Tenma with [[TheLancer Yato]], [[ActionGirl Yuzuriha]], [[BigBrotherMentor Dohko]], Sasha (even though they are pretty much JustFriends) and of course [[EvilFormerFriend Alone]]. You can choose whichever suits your taste.

* RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap: Not these Lost Canvas characters ''per se'', but when compared to their classic counterparts. Pisces Albafica and Cancer Manigoldo seem to fall under this trope in Lost Canvas, compared to the original series. Pegasus Tenma might also fall under this as he's far more likable than Seiya to some fans.
* {{Squick}}: In this universe, it is revealed that [[spoiler:Shion {{mind rape}}d the Cloths he had to repair and derived [[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything entrancing pleasure]] from it]]. Ewww. Even if he atoned for it, Ewww.

* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: Alone. [[spoiler: Did he really believe all the stuff about death being the ultimate salvation, or was he just pretending to be the bad guy in order to force others to kill him and seal Hades in the process?]]

* AssPull: Regulus [[spoiler: being able to perform both the Athena Exclamation (which requires ''three'' Gold Saints) and the Zodiac Exclamation (a move that's more powerful than the aforementioned Athena Exclamation and which requires '''all twelve Gold Saints to pull off''') all on his own during his battle against Rhadamanthys. The only redeeming point is that pulling these moves is what kills him.]]

* BetterThanCanon: This series is pretty much accepted by most fans as the canonical prequel of the original series, even though it's really more of an "official doujinshi". Kurumada, the original author, has made himself [[Manga/SaintSeiyaNextDimension the actual prequel]] using a similar setting. It probably has to do with the fact that Next Dimension has a [[DamselScrappy much more cliched]] [[RecycledScript and predicable storytelling]] with less likable characters than this very well-written series.

** Pisces Albafica is the most popular Gold Saint. He has his own RadioDrama SpinOff (that received a manga adaptation) and started the ''The Lost Canvas: Gaiden'' prequel. Albafica also make more appearances in other Gaiden chapters, like Manigold's or Sisyphus.

* BrokenBase: Whether Lost Canvas is a good series or not. There are three types of reactions regarding this matter:
** FirstInstallmentWins: Some people would feel that only the [[Manga/SaintSeiya original series]] is good and therefore dismissing all kind of sequels, including TLC. Not many people have this reaction, however.
** SurprisinglyImprovedSequel: The total opposite of the above, an amount of readers dislike the original but think that this manga is awesome (it helps that the original has quite a lot of {{Narm}} moments and overuses the "Rescue the Goddess" plot). But again, this reaction isn't very much.
** EvenBetterSequel: Most people in both the original fanbase and TLC fanbase have this. They find the original good, but TLC even better for improving some flaws the original had.
* CreatorsPet: Wyvern Rhadamanthys, for God's sake. His PlotArmor was thicker than an iceberg.
* DieForOurShip: Amusingly averted. There are many characters who are hated for various reasons, but so far none of the reasons has been "he/she stands in the way of my ship".
** Being the {{Expy}} of Saori, you would expect Sasha to be this, but thankfully she manages to avoid this for being a NiceGirl, a good ActionGirl (while Saori was always unluckily put in the DamselInDistress position and got hated for being a DamselScrappy) and her relationships with the Saints are at most LikeBrotherAndSister. That's why in slash fanfics, Sasha usually ends up in the YaoiFangirl position.

** Bennu Kagaho. It helps that he's an expy of Phoenix Ikki.
** Of the Gold Saints Cancer Manigoldo and Pisces Albafica.

* TakeThatScrappy: For all the Mephistopheles Youma dislike, well... it just makes his eventual defeat at the hands of [[spoiler:Gemini Aspros]] all the more satisfying.

* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter: Garuda Aiacos. After his defeat, he starts moping about whether he once had bonds and is interrupted by Kagaho who was sent to kill him. Kagaho instead spares him and tells him to remember his old persona, Suikyo. What does this mean? Who knows? Aiacos never returns.

* AdaptationDisplacement: This series is pretty much accepted by most fans as an "official" doujinshi prequel of the original series, even though Kurumada, the original author, has made himself [[Manga/SaintSeiyaNextDimension a prequel]] using this same settings. It probably has to do with the fact that, in all honesty, Next Dimension has a [[DamselScrappy much]] [[RecycledScript more poor storytelling]] with less likable characters than this very well-written series.

** This series as a whole when compare to all the other sequels. Being the most well-written, best-drawn in the various sequels, TLC becomes the most favorite sequel of the fans.
* EvilIsSexy: Pandora.

* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter: Garuda Aiacos. After his defeat, he starts moping about whether he once had bonds and is interrupted by Kagaho who was sent to kill him. Kagaho instead spares him and tells him to remember his old persona, Suikyo. What does this mean? Who knows? Aiacos never returns.
* TheWoobie: Crane Yuzuriha in the Lost Canvas Gaiden.
** Gemini Defteros's backstory.

* AdaptationDisplacement: Being an "official" doujinshi prequel of the original series.
* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: Alone. [[spoiler: Did he really believe all the stuff about death being the ultimate salvation or was he just pretending to be the bad guy in order to force others to kill him and seal Hades in the process.]]

* HoYay: For the fangirls, this is just added fuel for their Dohko/Shion fanfics! It doesn't help that every single Expy got [[MrFanservice very, very pretty.]]
** If [[Characters/SaintSeiyaGoldSaints Milo/Camus]] has always been a popular couple, [[RedOniBlueOni Kardia/Degel]] here are just too happy to make their relationship even more obvious. First, Degel asks Kardia specially to accompany him to Siberia and even convinces him, even though he can easily ask someone else. Second, they are seen together a lot, and in Scorpio Gaiden, their closeness even reminds Sasha of Tenma and Alone. Third, Degel is the only one who can cool down Kardia's heart fever, pretty much making Kardia depend on him, and many other moments. Doesn't help that the way they talk sometimes sound a bit BelligerentSexualTension.
** Minos keeping praising Albafica's beauty or [[CreepyCrossdresser Veronica]] with Manigoldo. Dohko/Kagaho's fight also has some.
** Radamanthys/Regulus on the front cover of Chapter 200 as well as during their fight.
** Alone/Hades with Tenma too especially at the moment when he takes Tenma's head in his hands very close to him as if to give him a kiss. This goes UpToEleven in the latest chapters (past 212).
** And of course Tenma with [[TheLancer Yato]]. They are at first rivals, but after Tenma was rescued from the Underworld, they become friendlier. Tenma regards Yato as a great friend, while Yato despite bickering with him and calling him an idiot a lot, really genuinely cares about Tenma. The infamous HeroicSacrifice Yato pulled for Tenma, the GetAHoldOfYourselfMan scene in chapter 216 only helps. Also, sometimes Yato is just like a {{Tsundere}} for Tenma.
** The Gaiden series is a fuel of this. We have Albafica having FoeYay with an enemy and being friendly with Manigoldo.
** Female example: Phantasos, in female form, licking Yuzuriha's face.

* CreatorsPet: Wyvern Rhadamanthys, for God's sake. His PlotArmor was thicker than in iceberg.

* BaseBreakingCharacter: Alone [[spoiler:for his Salvation Plan. Despite being labeled the purest person on the planet, there is a sizable portion of the fandom calling him more monstrous than Hades. However, many fans still like him as they think he's just a WellIntentionedExtremist and he still pulled a HeelFaceTurn in the end.]]
