Complaining and character-bashing, doesn't explain why the characters are meant to be sympathetic.

* FanPreferredCouple: Watts and Nick have a lot more fans than Nick and Mae.
* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: Good God, Mae. Everything about her is frustrating, as is Nick's relentless obsession with her and ultimately his denial leading him to ignore all the horrid things she did because she made him feel nice when they were in love. Mae is directly responsible for the death of an innocent woman, and her sordid past as what we assume is both a prostitute and a drug addict just makes her even more unlikable. Then there is the fact that she was willing to screw Nick (literally and figuratively) over to save her own hide. It's still his fault for becoming needlessly obsessed with her despite the obvious red flags, but she puts him in danger just as much with what she does. Mae's attempt to make up for getting the woman killed by saving her son still rings hollow since his mother would not be dead had Mae decided to face her own death for the bad choices she made instead of selling her out.

* EsotericHappyEnding: [[spoiler: Nick being subjected to constantly relieving his happy memories is something many fans considered a FateWorseThanDeath or at least life imprisonment. The movie treats it as a happy ending, though.]]

Nick is forever living happy moments, true, but his life is effectively over and his relationship with Mae was built on a lie. The movie treats it as a happy ending, though.]]

Family Unfriendly Aesop has been renamed Hard Truth Aesop and is not YMMV.

* FamilyUnfriendlyAesop: Ignore all the bad stuff in a past relationship and in a toxic partner. Just focus on the good and remember it fondly instead of accepting reality.
