- Esoteric Happy Ending: Nick being subjected to constantly relieving his happy memories is something many fans considered a Fate Worse than Death or at least life imprisonment. Nick is forever living happy moments, true, but his life is effectively over and his relationship with Mae was built on a lie. The movie treats it as a happy ending, though.
- Fan-Preferred Couple: Watts and Nick have a lot more fans than Nick and Mae.
