Most agree that the game was good all around, thanks to good gameplay, music, and fun characters, characters that are backed by a interesting midway point, but that it wasn't really impressive beyond that, and came out during what many see as the golden age for [=PS2=] jrpg's, meaning the game just couldn't create a solid impact to stick out.

Added DiffLines:

** Of all the faction leaders, Nix, the faction leader for the thieves guild is considered the worst one. The reason largely stems from how good the other three are, in combination of how you need to unlock all the other faction leaders first to get him. By comparison, Nix has really nothing of value to provide.

** Weapon wise, axes and spears were considered the worse weapons for Jack to wield in the game. While the axe had better damage, and the spear had solid damage combined with great reach, they both were too slow of weapon types, and made it risky to use in combat. The combos available also meant Jack could get attacked and damaged mid combo, leaving it even more risky to use then. By contrast, the one handed swords were quicker and had vastly better combo's available despite lower weapon damage, and the two handed swords were often of near power to axes, but had better combos than axes.

kill]]. Not helping is that the game rarely forces Jack into one on one fights, so the player will be caught off guard by the spike in challenge provided and likely die. It was so difficult in fact, that the guidebook actually outright told players to use weapons that petrified the enemy, because it was the only viable strategy for many, and that still was a tricky feat to accomplish.

Elwen, Kain, and Curtis are very strong units, with Elwen in particular being one of the strongest units period. For the Non-Human side, Galvados, JJ, and Gil are seen as very strong and capable units with good roles to fill.
