* AlternateCharacterInterpretation Is August a righteous crusader fighting against the people who exploited his sister and continue to dishonour her memory? Or just a raging [[KnightTemplar fundamentalist]] against people with a perfectly legal business? On the same lines, Charlie. August holds him responsible for Christina's death as well as everything that happened to Mia. Mia however has fond memories of him, nobody forced Christina into her job and the exact circumstances of her death are vague, making Charlie's part in it rather ambiguous. At the end of the movie [[spoiler: we see him putting flowers on the graves of August, Mia and Christina]].

* AnimationAgeGhetto: Mostly averted with critics and audiences praise the movie for combining [[TrueArtIsAngsty angsty]], [[{{Minimalism}} minimalist]] aesthetic of UsefulNotes/Dogme95 movies and styles can that only work in the medium of 2D animation. Though it's released under Zentropa's GRRR division where [[WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids it produces children's entertainment]].

* WhatAnIdiot: Seriously, if only August had planted the bomb inside something else instead Mia's plushy rabbit, [[spoiler: Mia wouldn't have been caught in the explosion and died. Of course, August's obsession with vengeance may have clouded his common sense.]]

** Then again, there's people working at the porn industry. Some have indeed abused Mia and probably deserved what they got. But for the rest: are they just normal people desperate to stop a crazed madman (even if they know his motive) when the police refuse to help them (and sick and tired of being judged for their line of work), or are they a bunch of assholes [[NeverMyFault who refuse to take responsibility]] and want to stop someone from meddling in their affairs?

* DesignatedHero: While August's goal is sympathetic, most of the things he does make it very difficult to root for him, such as beating up a man simply for going out with a prostitute, breaking a boy's arm, blowing up a porn industry which very likely had innocent workers that did nothing to deserve being sacrificed, and at the end, plants a bomb inside the mansion that charlie is supposedly hanging out at, killing many innocent lives in the process, [[spoiler:including Mia...]].

Because of this, not only is hard to root for August, but it's also just as hard to care about how the story gets resolved, and the way it does get resolved is [[DownerEnding not nice...]]
