*** Now has become even more harsher now that Gearbox's reputation has taken a massive nosedive. From refusing to pay their workers bonuses to allegations that they embezzled money from their contract with Sega to fund Borderlands 2. The most damning thing is CEO Randy Pitchford getting into a violent fight with Claptrap's VA David Eddings, causing them to leave the company. It puts the whole joke in a much darker light now.

** Replacing Max with Sam is regarded as a smart move with Sam being much funnier on his own than Max was on the last game. Plus with Max still there on the side, players get the best of Sam’s lone snark and Max’s randomness.
** The larger amount of the initial money in the stakes and the steeper blinds helps games move along faster than before.
** Unlocking items overall is much smoother and way less reliant on chance. To unlock character specific items; rather than relying on chance you need to compete three missions, once those are done all you need to do is win a tournament and you are guaranteed the item. Everything else is bought with tokens, which you earn even if you lose a tournament. This ensures you can unlock everything even if you aren’t the best at poker and/or get a string of bad hands.

* UnintentionalPeriodPiece: The use of characters like GlaDOS, Brock Samson, along with various references to game and pop culture at the time (Brock can sometimes be heard to say he'll be "home in time for ''Series/DowntonAbbey'', as an example) pegs this game pretty exactly as an early 2010's game.

In this game, Sam himself will sometimes randomly sing a line of the same song.

* SequelDifficultyDrop: As far as getting items is concerned. For the special items, in the first game, the chances to get them came up randomly, and you had to specifically knock the character out to win the item. In this game, you earn a shot at one of the special items by completing certain objectives, and once you get the chance, all you have to do is win that tournament to get the item. You're given more forewarning, and you don't have to change your strategy to try to win the item, so it's less nerve-wracking overall. And for the tables, card backs, and chips, you buy them with inventory tokens, and you'll get some tokens even if you lost the tournament, so you'll unlock everything eventually.

** Sam's line "Great day in the morning!" becomes rather irritating after hearing it for nearly every all-in.
** [=GLaDOS=] says, "Well, that was a clever move that won't come back to bite you in your ample posterior" WAY too often.
** Many players found themselves wondering why the devs gave the longest lines and the shorter pool of jokes to the one character specifically designed to be annoying and disliked. Claptrap, in case you were wondering. all of the other players just sit and talk, which allows the player to mostly keep playing while the storylines play out, Claptrap often has animations that stop the game completely while he's shut down, stuck on a loop, or moving around the table. if that wasn't enough, his high pitched voice and shouting gets grating pretty fast.
