* MemeticMutation: This is the movie where the meme that Ash is TheChosenOne for ''everything'' started. The prophecy didn't help. It perpetuated to the point that a common fanfiction cliche is for Ash, being TheChosenOne, would get amazing powers on top of commanding numerous legendary Pokemon.
* ValuesDissonance: Misty yells at Lawrence for collecting Legendary Pokemon as trophies. Which is, you know, [[YouBastard basically what you do in the games]].
** Though in the Japanese dub, she is merely asking why he is catching them so cruelly, instead of in a Pokeball.

* {{Woolseyism}}: The part specifically citing Ash as the ChosenOne, and thus the ProphecyTwist, was a Dub invention. Originally, the prophecy only cited that "an exceptional trainer" was capable of averting the catastrophe.

** To be fair, trainers in the games have to put up a fair fight to catch a Pokemon, and Poke Balls are a lot more comfortable than cages. The "Gotta Catch 'em All" slogan was coined by Norman Grossfeld, who famously knows roughly as much about Pokemon as the average person knows about nuclear fission. Battling is really the main focus of the games, rather than collecting (given that all you get for completing your Pokedex is a diploma).
** Also, Pokemon appear to kind of ''like'' the Poke Balls for some reason - probably because it makes them feel secure or something. The Legendary Birds were being confined in giant, cramped looking cages that were ''[[ElectricTorture electrocuting]]'' them to keep them contained and were noticeably struggling and screeching with what we can assume is pain.
** As an amusing side note, the chief who recites the prophecy warning about disturbing the legendaries is named Tobias in the closed-captioning. The same name as a later trainer whose act of capturing and using legendaries in battle opened the subject to debate again.
* WhatAnIdiot: Lawrence III apparently decides that destroying the world will be worth it if he can complete his collection.
** Actually even stupider. He doesn't '''REALIZE''' that he's behind it, despite the disruption he's caused being the only logical conclusion. Although when he really takes the IdiotBall is when he lets the twerps, who're clearly angry at him, loose in his gallery with the imprisoned Birds. When you tool around in an airship the size of a community college, you couldn't think of ANY other place to put them?
*** But he's an ego maniac. [[FridgeLogic He probably wanted them to see how awesome his collection was.]]
*** Come to that he probably thought HE was the chosen one of the prophesy, and that his actions were destined to stop the destruction, not cause it. He's not an idiot, just a complete narcissist.
**** To be fair, anyone attending the festival can see that the chosen one is just picked at random out of the audience. He may have even BEEN a past chosen one for all we know. Also it may depend on how you define "narcissist", because his image song shows that he puts his collection WAY above himself and, if anything, lives to take care of it.

* HilariousInHindsight: The premise and [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uC3rXu09R8 opening theme]] of the movie's Pikachu Short, Pikachu's Rescue Adventure will no doubt bring to mind a certain [[PokemonMysteryDungeon spin-off series]] that started six years later.

* AmbiguouslyAutistic: Lawrence. He seems to have learned social skills entirely by rote, has a narrow and fixed attention span, wears a long coat with an undershirt to tropical islands in the middle of summer, has almost no change in facial expression or vocal intonation despite living by his passions, seems to have difficulty recognizing cues from others, and takes everything, including the legend and Misty screaming at him, only by the words presented without considering tone or alternate meaning.
