* BrokenBase: His ''WesternAnimation/TurtlesForever'' review is one of his most divisive. For some it was a bad case of AccentuateTheNegative especially for a fairly popular movie while others agreed with many of his criticisms. The arguments about whether the 80s Turtles underwent {{Flanderization}} is a big BrokenBase for the movie and several of its detractors appreciated Phelous giving a voice to those complaints while other fans saw them as non-issues or the critics exaggerating.

* SomeAnvilsNeedToBeDropped: His ''Film/HouseOfWax'' review has a three minute long section of him and other reviewers 'celebrating' the murder of Creator/ParisHilton's character so over-zealously that it's clear they're mocking the creators for thinking viewers wanted to see Hilton die gratuitously for the crime of... Being a somewhat vacuous reality TV star and having a sex tape.

** He caught some flack for his review of ''VideoGame/ResidentEvilVillage'' as most of his review showed clear bias against Ethan and how he just didn't like him as a main character with his criticism amounting to "Oh he's not as cool as the others in the series". At one point calling him an idiot for not taking Heisenberg's deal to help him save his daughter. As most of his commenters pointed out though, Heisenberg nearly tried to kill him earlier in the game and didn't exactly make a convincing argument on how he would go about doing that. Plus [[spoiler: Miranda was the only one who could reassemble Rose back into her original form, which only happened ''after'' Miranda nearly killed Ethan]], so there was no way Ethan could've known. Likewise if a man wielding the barest of armaments could take down half his robotic forces, exactly what chance did Heisenberg have against a woman who could control vines?

** He's gotten quite a bit of backlash for giving a negative review of ''WesternAnimation/TurtlesForever'' stating that it glorified the 2003 incarnation of the turtles and dumbed-down the 1980s incarnation of the turtles. The Website/YouTube version of the review had him confessing he had yet to see the 2003 series prior to first viewing Turtles Forever, which is part of what led to him hating the movie. After watching the 2003 series he now admits to liking the 2003 TMNT cartoon and the movie isn't as bad as he once thought, but still dislikes the constant {{Take That}}s towards the 1987 Turtles.

** In his review of the ''Series/MortalKombatConquest'' episode "The Master", he goes on an extended rant about the show depicting Shao Khan as being the one who taught Shang Tsung how to soul steal, believing it to be stupid that Khan would be teaching his own sorcerer magical techniques. However, in the [[Film/MortalKombatTheMovie movie]] the show is based off of it's established early on that it was indeed Khan who tutored Tsung in the black arts, making the scene one of the few times ''Conquest'' managed to keep proper continuity with the film.

** All of the crossovers starring Phelan, Allison and Creator/BradJones are more likely to become uncomfortable to watch since the latter two are no longer on speaking terms with each other after the aforementioned "Not So Awesome" document came to light. Brad went so far as to ''mock'' Allison's struggles with depression in a later ''Cinema Snob'' video, which probably makes it even worse.

* {{Special Effects| Failure}} [[JustForPun Phailure]]: Phelous' own effects are actually pretty good for a lone guy doing them on his own. He'll often mock those of the movie, though.
** An entirely ''needless'' special effects failure occurred throughout much of ''Pulse 2,'' where actors were green-screened into scenes that they didn't even need to be, such as in front of houses and such. Phelous mocks this by screening himself in front of his own normal background (it's actually good enough that you might not have noticed unless he pointed it out, complete with his image doing a 180).
** PlayedForLaughs during his "Halloweenie" series, as part of the general StylisticSuck aesthetic.
** Actually calls out ''Series/NinjaTurtlesTheNextMutation'''s use of YourCostumeNeedsWork in "Turtles' Night Out" by commenting how pointing out how bad the Turtles look is pointless when the costumes for them already look bad from a real-life perspective.

* EightDeadlyWords:
** He finds the characters of the first ''Film/CabinFever'' so unlikable, and annoyed they constantly throw "gay" as an insult that he doesn't even call them by name, just referring to them as Jackass 1, Jackass 2, etc. When a girl tells her LoveInterest "don't be gay" when he asks her if they are dating, Phelous openly asks, "Who the hell are we supposed to ''care'' about in this movie?!"
** In ''Film/TheHumanCentipede'', he finds Lindsay and Jenny so whiny and annoying that eventually, he snaps and declares he doesn't care about what happens to them anymore; he goes so far as to state that he can't ''wait'' for them to get stitched together ass-to-mouth just so he doesn't have to listen to them talk anymore.
** The ''Film/{{Hostel}}'' movies get a ''lot'' of this from him.

After [[http://phelous.tumblr.com/post/108013883721/goodbye-farewell-and-amen-ca reading Phelan revealed]] part of the reason he left Channel Awesome was because the site's management was accused him of "half-assing" the effects in the anniversary movies behind his back, it's rather uncomfortable to watch.

** The ''Film/JacobsLadder'' review makes the RunningGag of [[spoiler:Phelous dying]] into one of these, with TheReveal that [[spoiler:not just the entire episode, but ''the entire series'' starting from his death in the ''Film/MacAndMe'' review was a DyingDream, and his dying repeatedly are attempts to come to terms with his death and move on]]. Given his normal sensibilities, though, this can be interpreted as a [[BlackComedy particularly dark version of being]] HilariousInHindsight.
** In the ''Film/ChildsPlay2'' crossover with Critic, Critic shamelessly whores out ''WebVideo/SuburbanKnights'' and when Phelous calls him out on it, he says “it's either that or another midroll” before grinning and cutting to commercial. Cute, but not so much [[http://imgur.com/a/K8Xe4 after chatlogs were revealed]] of Rob telling Lupa off for “too many midrolls”.
** It can be a little awkward to watch the [[ButtMonkey Bat Hero]] segments with [[http://www.autoblog.com/2015/08/17/philanthropist-batman-dies-in-tragic-car-crash/ the tragic death of Lenny B. Robinson]], who dressed up as Batman using that same costume to cheer up terminally ill children. It doesn't help that Bat Hero's first appearance had him die with a crunchy sound effect.

* HarsherInHindsight:
** The ending skit to his review of ''Pulse (2006)'' involves Creator/JewWario asking Phelous "want to see a ghost?" and then proceeding to perform the "face downloading" that the ghosts in the movie did to their victims. With [=JewWario=]'s passing in 2014, a joke about him being a "ghost" doesn't seem quite so funny anymore. Lampshaded by Phelous himself in the Website/YouTube version of the same review where he acknowledges the now awkward nature of the joke, but would rather leave it in out of respect for his old friend.
*** In April 16, 2018, Phelous edited his ''Pulse (2006)'' review to remove Creator/JewWario completely in light of the "Not So Awesome" document revealing his past of sexual misconduct. The ending was also changed so that an internet ghost from Kairo (the original Japanese Pulse) downloads Phelous' face instead.
** After hearing about some of the unpleasant things that have gone on behind the scenes leading up to Phelous' departure from Website/ChannelAwesome, as well as his general displeasure with ''To Boldly Flee'', a lot of his [[TakeThat Take Thats]] directed towards the film, WebVideo/TheNostalgiaCritic, ''WebVideo/DemoReel'', Creator/DougWalker and so on seem less like friendly jabs and a lot more pointed and acidic.

** Phelous' constant jabs and mocking of Creator/JodelleFerland due to her performance in ''Film/SilentHill'' becomes a bit more mean-spirited and borderline cruel considering Ferland actually underwent a CreatorBreakdown due to the immense nature of Dark Alessa, forcing director Roger Avary to apologize to Ferland's parents for putting her in such a dark role.

** In the end credits of one of his early reviews, he added a note at the end stating that he was going for WebVideo/TheNostalgiaCritic's record for dying in his reviews. Probably safe to say that he's succeeded by now.
** It's been taken UpToEleven lately, with him dying in ''[[DeathByCameo other people's]]'' reviews.
*** The gag has apparently been retired, as he doesn't die nearly as much after adopting the ''Doctor Who'' intro. To Phelous's chagrin after reviewing the [=30th=] Anniversary edition of ''Film/NightOfTheLivingDead1968'' (which featured a new score and new scenes badly spliced into it).

* AuthorsSavingThrow: His ''Film/FunnyGames'' review was criticized by many who felt that he had reviewed it as a straight horror film and seemed to miss that it was a {{Deconstruction}} of the horror genre. Phelous would later do a follow-up video a few years later where he focused more on the film's themes and his own issues with them.

* {{Squick}}: When Bevanfield's Literature/{{Rapunzel}} blurts out to the witch that she let a prince climb into the tower, Phelous calls her carelessness more kid-friendly than, but about as stupid as, versions in which Rapunzel and the prince make out ''in the tower'', resulting in the witch discovering via Rapunzel's TeenPregnancy that she let a prince inside. For visual aid, Phelous displays a screenshot of an unofficial ''Disney/{{Tangled}}'' mobile game, in which the player must help Disney's Rapunzel give birth (despite her remaining a virgin by the end of ''Tangled'').
