* JerkassWoobie: RJ might be stealing and manipulating the other characters, but he has to eat ''something''.

* GeniusBonus: In the film, Tiger is completely unaffected by Stella's musk, which he explains is due to his facial structure, which has removed his ability to smell. This is a more kid-friendly nod to a real-life health issue common amongst Persians and other "flat-faced" cat breeds called "Brachycephalic airway syndrome", where their distorted skull can narrow the nasal aperture so drastically that it seriously impedes their ability to breathe.

* {{Narm}}: The otherwise tragic end of the second act, where Verne trying and failing to tell his family that RJ is dangerous, loses a bit of its tension by including verbal gags like Heather yelling at him in stereotypical [[BuffySpeak teen girl slang]] (which is especially random, since it's the ''only'' time in the movie she talks like this) and Stella [[UnusualEuphemism describing Verne's tail twitching as his "butt vibrating."]]

* EvilIsSexy: Gladys Sharp. She's a cold-hearted ControlFreak who wants [[BadPeopleAbuseAnimals all the "vermin"]] [[KickTheDog in her neighborhood killed]], but she's also rather easy on the eyes.

** Gladys Sharp is definitely not a nice person. With that said, it's hard to fault her for calling the exterminator since the animals ''were'' vermin that were making a mess of the neighborhood with their constant raids. It should also be noted that she, like the other human characters, has no idea the animals are fully sapient beings. At the same time, her methods of trying to keep them away were more than a bit much, including purchasing a contraband item.

** Gladys crossed it when she called Dwayne in to deal with the animals, especially as it's obvious she just wants to kill them.
** If Vincent didn't cross it when he attempted to kill RJ for getting his stash destroyed, he did when he came after RJ at the end and extended his wrath the others.

* StuckInTheirShadow: They're not exactly ''hated'' per say, but the Porcupine Family are easily the least popular characters of the movie, as compared to the main cast and [[EnsembleDarkhorse Heather and Ozzie]], they have the least about of relevance and point to be around.

* UnintentionallySympathetic: We're supposed to hate Gladys Sharp for trying to kill the animals. However, she only wants to do so because sees them as vermin who destroy stuff, steal food, and spread disease, which is exactly what they are.

* HarsherInHindsight: Shortly after Hammy and RJ make off with a wagon of girl scout cookies, Gladys fears the "rabid squirrel" could be the sign of a global pandemic. [[UsefulNotes/Covid19Pandemic Guess what emerges]] 13 years after the film's release.

** At one point, RJ pulls a Troll doll out of his golf bag years before Dreamworks would buy out and [[WesternAnimation/Trolls make films out of the toy]].

** If Vincent didn't cross it when he attempted to kill RJ for getting his stash destroyed, he did when he came after RJ at the end and even tried to attack the others.

** Verne trying to convince the other animals to eat bark has been jokingly compared to vegan food and well-done steaks.

* EnsembleDarkhorse: Despite being the character who [[OutOfFocus has the least screentime of the movie]], [[DaddysGirl Heather]] is one of the most popular characters of the film due to her friendly nature and being voiced by Music/AvrilLavigne. Additionally, she's become PopularWithFurries due to a massive upsurge in popularity on the subreddit, with over 80% of the posts being about her and her ShipTease with RJ. Pretty much, she could match RJ and Verne in popularity.

* TheScrappy: They're not exactly ''hated'' per say, but the Porcupine Family are easily the least popular characters of the movie, as compared to the main cast and [[EnsembleDarkhorse Heather and Ozzie]], they have the least about of relevance and point to be around.

* AcceptableTargets: The Depelter Turbo, an infamously dangerous and inhumane contraband trap in the Verminator's arsenal, is illegal in every state… except UsefulNotes/{{Texas}}.

* VindicatedByHistory: For a while, it was either labeled as just an alright film or downright bad. However, it nowadays is way more respected due to its very likable cast, strong voice acting, subverting usually popular "Liar Revealed" story, and great music. It's to the extent that out of all the one-off films Dreamworks has done, this film is one of the most requested to receive a sequel.

* AwardSnub: Some fans were disappointed when the film was snubbed for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in favor of ''WesternAnimation/MonsterHouse'', ''WesternAnimation/{{Cars}}'' and ''WesternAnimation/HappyFeet''.

** Baby Hammy is shaping up this way as well. Some find him adorable; others, too creepy.

* AdaptationDisplacement: Most people are more familiar with the film than the strip.
