The dream is something both Naho and Suwa see, presumably showing them a glimpse of the main story timeline. While Mirai shows she never fully got over Kakeru's death, Naho/Suwa is not portrayed as unhappy and is textually shown that they love each other and that he helped mend her broken heart.

* ContestedSequel: ''Mirai'' ended up [[BrokenBase splitting the fanbase right in two]], one half believing that it's a good sequel that properly ties up the loose ends left in the original Manga, while the other firmly thinks that it's nothing more than a shameless cash-in due to its heavy recycling of material from the Anime, not to mention [[spoiler: completely rejecting the Naho/Suwa ship by showing that Naho not only ended up with Kakeru in the altered timeline, but also was unhappy with her life with Suwa to the point she dreams of being with Kakeru instead in the original timeline]].

* BaseBreakingCharacter: Naho and Kakeru are extremely divisive within the anime fandom during the second half of the story, due to Naho's thickheadedness and Kakeru's bullheadedness often holding up, or even regressing the story. Their romance is only moving forward because of all the effort their friends putting into it, not to mention that Naho has such a frim grasp on the IdiotBall through the entire series to the point that "Suwa is the real hero of the story" is basically a meme within the fandom. On the other hand, people also love Naho for trying her best to break out of her shell and help Kakeru, while Kakeru is also liked for his character development.

* HypeBacklash: The anime adaptation was a thing most fans basically begged for after the manga and the half-decent Live Action adaptation. But when it actually came out, it ended up having severe quality drops in the animation (With some people going as far as comparing it to ''[[Anime/DragonBallSuper Dragon Ball Super's]]'' infamous Episode 5), a very lackluster soundtrack and sub-par voice acting (There's even a certain part where ''they swapped Naho's and Azusa's voices''). Needless to say, most of the fandom was ''not amused''.

Confirmed = no longer applicable.

* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: Future Naho gets hit with this a lot. Is she genuinely regretful about not being able to save Kakeru in the past even though she was perfectly capable of, and it's doing it entirely out of good will so he can have a chance of living his life? Or is she a selfish ManipulativeBitch that married Suwa out of pity and remorse, and is trying to change the past, pulling along her friends and outright lying to Suwa about how she's probably gonna end up marrying him anyway, just so she can date Kakeru instead? The extreme ambiguity of the manga's ending doesn't help at all.
** [[spoiler: TheMovie outright confirms the latter to be the case. To say that the fandom went [[BrokenBase nuclear]] after this reveal is a huge understatement.]]

* TheWoobie:
** Kakeru. He spends almost the entire series suffering from depression and trying to fight off suicidal urges. And then there's the Kakeru of [[BreakTheCutie the original timeline]].
** Suwa. He is such a NiceGuy, [[spoiler: he sacrifices his future love with Naho and child just to save Kakeru.]] Many fans just feel sorry for the guy.
Is there an issue? Send a MessageReason:

** YMMV for two reasons, here: one, yes, it's such a huge plot point that's stretched out... but also [[spoiler: the original manga implies they simply shoved letters in a time capsule and included a request for them to be mailed to them on the exact dates. Considering the location, was there any real chance of them realistically receiving it?]] Given, depending on your interpretation, [[spoiler: you could also take this timeline as the 'luckiest' - that there are a thousand possible destinations for their letters, and this is the timeline that had them end up delivered where they needed to be.]] ... Which is still pretty trope-qualifying, really.
** To some reviewers, this explanation hinges on TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot, as it could make the story be a good example of MagicRealism. Knowing how they sent the letters to the past wasn't needed for the story to work, as it can be easily scrapped.

* CounterpartComparison: Obviously with ''Manga/{{Erased}}'', since both manga are dedicated to the main character, who "correct" their childhood past due to huge regrets in the future and to save the deceased important person for them. In both works there is also an unclear love triangle and a character who renounces his future for the sake of someone else's happiness. Moreover, the adaptation of both works was aired in the same year and their end caused a similar response from the audience. The main difference is that Orange is a mild romantic story focused on girls, while Erased is darker and includes things like child abuse, murder and psychology.
