* AuthorsSavingThrow:
** Fans were annoyed that Ursula being introduced in this arc completely ignored what had been established about her character in "Ariel". This episode reveals that they were two different people - and Merrin Dungey's Ursula was just named after the sea goddess. And she turned herself into a cephelopod to homage the goddess.
** A meta one. The original cut of ''WesternAnimation/TheLittleMermaid1989'' had Ursula as Ariel's aunt - making fans wonder how she could be related when she's a different species. This offers an explanation; Ursula was once a mermaid but turned her tail into tentacles with the trident.

* {{Narm}}:
** Ursula asks Hook if her happy ending is in his ship. As if it's a physical thing.
** There's also the scene where Hook says Emma is his happy ending - coupled with slow motion and violins...while Jennifer Morrison looks as if she couldn't care less. What's more is that the show tries to play this up as a dramatic reveal as if it had ever been in doubt.

* SheReallyCanAct: Merrin Dungey had some ReplacementScrappy heat - as fans thought she was completely replacing Yvette Nicole Brown as Ursula - and she was neither as imposing as Maleficent nor as fun as Cruella. But she proved her talents here in this episode.

* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: Ursula's singing of "Fathoms Below" in the tavern. Sure it's magically enhanced but it's still nice to listen to.
* BrokenBase: Ursula's backstory split viewers. Some fans loved it, and others found it too much like Ariel's. And there's the matter of her redemption. Too EasilyForgiven or did she make up for it?
* FranchiseOriginalSin: At the time ''Once Upon A Time'' had not redeemed a villain in a while (not since Regina, which had been built steadily over Seasons 2 and 3) - with Greg, Tamara, Peter Pan and Zelena all dying at the end of their arcs (as well as Rumple slipping back into villainy). Ursula was a little EasilyForgiven for her redemption - but it did get justified from a story point of view (she gives the heroes information and helps them out to balance things, as well as leaving to go back to her own world). This was before numerous other villains would get EasilyForgiven outright, with their previous villainy being completely ignored.

* NarmCharm: Rumple's interrogation technique on August? Holding him over the fire knowing his nose will grow if he lies. It's equal parts silly and clever.
