** This leads to the discussion about how Tomoko remains a jerkass, but being worse off in high school may make readers overlook her less savory traits. In the main series, she still has the same jerkass tendencies but she's [[JerkassWoobie depicted more pitifully]]. At present, her only friend attends a different school while she's making no new friends on her own, and she's also a massive ButtMonkey, Whereas in the prequel, Tomoko is less pitiful since she regularly hangs out with her only friend and Komiyama, and isn't as much of a ButtMonkey. The main manga also shows Tomoko's point of view while the prequel shows what other people think of her.

Tomoko is shown starting a club of her own and bonding with her schoolmates... and then it's revealed that [[YankTheDogsChain it was all in her imagination]], her proposal for a club got rejected by the school council and she's sitting alone in her room, having a tea with her puppets and retreating into her fantasies.

Eventually the teacher calls her into the staff room to tell her she should make some friends; the teacher's been watching her all week and has noticed that Tomoko's ''not OK''. Just the acknowledgement that Tomoko's having problems makes it all a lot more real somehow.

* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: In the prequel spin-off, Tomoko is more a jerkass and less sympathetic than in the original, thanks to Komiyama. Interestingly, it's written by the original authors.
** Which leads to the discussion that Tomoko has always been a jerkass, its just her lack of friends, or even a life, in the original, as well as being a massive ButtMonkey causes fans to overlook her less savory personality, due to pity. Where as in the prequel, Tomoko has one friend and one SitcomArchNemesis, both of which she often hangs out with and isn't as much of a ButtMonkey. So since fans don't pity her as much they see more of her jerkass tendencies.
