YMMV cannot be played with. This also doubled as a Justifying Edit

** Downplayed, RecycledSoundtrack and assets aside the game still had a few new Powerups, a 3D map reminiscent of ''VideoGame/SuperMarioWorld'', Single Player Challenges, Baby Yoshis, Nabbit, and Peachette on ''Deluxe'' that gave it its own identity that separates it from its predecessors in spite of the re usage of content.

* VindicatedByHistory: At launch the game was written off by many for the perceived over-saturation of the ''New Super Mario Bros.'' games and their lack of innovation, and for being a poor choice of launch title for the UsefulNotes/WiiU, since it didn't make full use of the system's capabilities. However, as time went on, many fans began to overlook the unfortunate circumstances of its release and admire the game for its difficulty and branching levels. The re-release on Switch was therefore much better received, usual grumblings about Wii U ports on Switch aside.

* BaseBreakingCharacter: Peachette. Some see her as one of the most ridiculous, confusing and unnecessary characters to exist in the series, with many fans arguing that if they wanted a princess character without making Peach playable, they could've simply made Daisy or Rosalina playable instead of making a new character/power up from scratch. Others though, love the sheer bizarreness of the concept for the many possibilities it provides and considers Peachette to be a cute and unique addition to the game, as well as a clever way to make Peach playable without changing the game's story. The fact that her existence would inadvertently lead to the infamous [[JustForFun/{{Bowsette}} Super Crown]] trend hasn't helped her case.

* DiscreditedMeme: In early January of 2019, [[https://youtu.be/lp-SE1PdOvk?t=16 the official New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe website]] confirmed that the Super Crown power-up can only work canonically with Toadette, not only [[{{Jossed}} disconfirming]] the possibility of [[JustForFun/{{Bowsette}} the Super Crown working on Bowser]], but at the same time, the possibility of working on any other character. It seems that Creator/{{Nintendo}} has had enough of that meme. Unsurprisingly, given the ambiguity of the Super Crown was what kickstarted the whole meme to start with, the Bowsette trend would experience a sharp decline as a result of Nintendo killing that ambiguity. It didn't help either that many were getting burnt out and sick of the meme around the same time, causing a form of backlash to form against the trend that would further send it into decline.

* ReplacementScrappy: Peachette tends to be regarded as this amongst fans of Peach and Daisy, who view her as an unnecessary and confusing inclusion that stole away the possibility of either one being playable. Daisy fans were especially miffed by Peachette's inclusion since she not only took away what could've been an opportunity for her to be playable in a mainline ''Super Mario'' title, but that she also uses her DoubleJump move from ''VideoGame/SuperMarioRun''.

* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: The consolidation of Yellow Toad and Blue Toad into a single "Toad" slot in the ''Deluxe'' version means that if you play the ''NSMBU'' part with four players, one of you will ''have'' to use an easier character (either Toadette or Nabbit). In ''NSLU'', ''two'' of you will need to use them, since Mario isn't playable in it.

Removed example, after prior consult on the matter in the "Is this an example?" thread in the forums (see here for reference). Peach giving Toadette a kiss is a recycled version of Peach giving Yellow Toad a kiss (the latter was replace by the former in the Switch version), the characters who cheer are simply celebrating that Peach is safe from Bowser (and Nabbit simply flees to avoid being captured for his thefts). And most important of all, Toadette is a kid, and Peach is an adult
