Added DiffLines:

* IKnewIt: Some viewers suspected that Princess Celestia knew all along which ponies would become the bearers of the Elements of Harmony. Celestia's flashback story confirms this, showing Applejack, Rarity, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, and Fluttershy when she says "I knew there was a special group of fillies in Ponyville".

Now Trivia requiring official confirmation it was made in response to complaints.

* AuthorsSavingThrow: After 6 seasons of little to no character development, Celestia finally gets some much needed love in this episode. Not only does she give Twilight valuable advice about what to do with Starlight Glimmer, but she even admits that she went through the same type of situation with Twilight. We see her as a classroom teacher, we see her fret and have doubts, we see her pace while she considers plans etc.

* BrokenBase:
** A lot of people are skeptical about Starlight having earned a graduation so soon, after the things she did in the last season and having only one big adventure under her belt. On the other hand, since it actually [[StatusQuoIsGod didn't end up changing much]] about Starlight's story compared to her status from the previous season, a lot of people are accusing the whole "graduation" and everything leading up to it being there effectively just as an opportunity to [[CharacterShilling praise Starlight,]] not helped by how the story isn't at all subtle about how awesome Twilight thinks Starlight is. And then some people got worried about Celestia's in-passing mention of letting a student "spread her wings" being an obvious foreshadowing of Starlight ascending to alicornhood somewhere along the line. Others feel that a lot of it is just unnecessary doomsaying, since, for the most part, everything stayed the same and Celestia's take on the issue made the whole story a lot more meaningful. At the end of it all, the episode was just that: mostly harmless.

Only applies to the work made this, not causing it. And YMMV can't be play3d with.

* HarsherInHindsight: Celestia sending Twilight to Ponyville when she did had a disastrous effect on Moondancer. If only Celestia had taken an interest in her other students' welfare, rather than just her star pupil...
* HeartwarmingInHindsight:
** Spike reads Celestia's letter in "Friendship is Magic Part 1" as though Celestia is chiding Twilight. Instead, Celestia was as seriously concerned with Nightmare Moon as Twilight was and probably wrote it as a gentle nudge that would help Twilight with her (Celestia's) concern of having no friends.
** "Friendship is Magic Part 2" has Celestia posing a difficult choice for Twilight: returning to Canterlot to continue her studies, or staying in Ponyville with her new friends she's come to enjoy. Celestia ''herself'' [[TakeAThirdOption decides to make a compromise for Twilight]] and notes she can stay in Ponyville but write friendship lessons to Celestia. This may have come about from Celestia's own inner conflict about wanting Twilight to be more social but be reminded Twilight still respects her, and Celestia's own taking a third option managed to work out well both for Twilight and herself.

* SpoiledByTheFormat: Subverted. We've had six season premieres and four finales that were two-parters, so (if you didn't look at the episode recaps first) you'd expect a cliffhanger and "to be continued..." - wait, what? The next episode is a standalone day in the limelight? This subsequently confused some viewers who, wanting to go in blind with no spoilers, thought this and [[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS7E2AllBottledUp the following episode]] which aired back to back were a two-part episode.

He doesn't get Starlight to be with him which he wanted, that's karma enough. And Karma Houdini isn't subjective.

** Discord's behavior in this episode. Some fans are annoyed by how he's ''still'' trolling Twilight after all this time, feeling that it undermines the HeroesFrontierStep he took in the season 6 finale, and his CharacterDevelopment in general (It doesn't help that he receives [[KarmaHoudini no comeuppance]] for his actions). Others point out that Discord ''was'' helping Twilight by making her realize Starlight was ready to graduate, and that this was his tamest scheme yet, the worst possible outcome of it being Twilight getting mildly embarrassed.

* TheVoiceless: Rarity's the only member of the Mane 6 to not speak in this episode (despite her prominence), ergo making it the first season premiere where a main character doesn't have a single line of dialogue.
