* FridgeLogic: Writers' intent aside, was there any compelling reason for Twilight Sparkle not to be on one of the Ponyville teams?

Silly as I think this trope is to include, we could at least try to keep it slightly neutral. Sarcasm just makes it unclear.

* AccidentalAesop: If your friends make you stuff and cheer for you, you have to do what they want and be on their team. Because they can't do nice things for you if you're on another team. You totally can't cheer on both teams. Even though that's what the cheerleaders did at the end.

* CompressedVice: Applied to the Wonderbolts/Cloudsdale members Spitfire and Fleetfoot: where they've been portrayed before as nice ponies, here they lie about the extent of Soarin's injuries so that they could replace him with Dash because they care more about being the best than flying with their friend.
** Though, to be fair, it is a sporting event, and she isn't perfect. Sometimes, you lose sight of what's important. Doesn't mean you can't regain focus.
** Not to mention that Soarin' is shown to be the least focused Wonderbolt who's competing (he injures himself by getting distracted by the cheerleaders), so it isn't out of nowhere that Spitfire and Fleetfoot might want to swap him out for somepony who takes the competition seriously, especially if he isn't fully recovered.

* JerkassBall: Held by Spitfire and Fleetfoot.

Added DiffLines:

** There's also the fact that while they were kinda jerkish to Soarin, they never resorted to cheating and only tried to replace one teammate (who has shown himself to be less than serious) with another who's extremely talented and motivated.

Not really seeing any broken aesops here, and in any event, there is no maybe. It either is or it isn\'t.

* BrokenAesop: Maybe? If the writers believed that "friendship is more important than being the best" was such a good lesson, why did they feel the need to add in the Wonderbolts holding the JerkassBall so that Rainbow Dash would have a reason other than friendship to turn down the Cloudsdale team? Was friendship not enough of a reason for that?
** Oh yeah, cause Rainbow Dash isn't known to really want to be a winner at everything and dreams of being a wonder bolt. its no wonder she went a third route with this.
Is there an issue? Send a MessageReason:
Major difference between Lightning Dust and Spitefire. Spitfire didn\'t endanger Soarin\'s life just for the sake of winning. S

* CompressedVice: Applied to the Wonderbolts/Cloudsdale members Spitfire and Fleetfoot: where they've been portrayed before as nice ponies, here they lie about Soarin being hurt so that they could replace him with Dash because they care more about being the best than flying with their friend. Even though in "Wonderbolts Academy" Spitfire was a ReasonableAuthorityFigure who did prioritize things like safety and level-headedness over being the best.

* AlternateCharacterInterpretation: Thought it certainly did look like Spitfire was the DesignatedVillain, one way of looking at it was that she, Fleetfoot, and possibly Soarin' deliberately put themselves in that role to test Dash, in which case she (again!) passed with flying colors.

Not really. Soarin was flight capable, they just wanted the extra oomph.

** Once again, Spitfire is portrayed as a Jerkass for the first two thirds of the episode, and unlike "Wonderbolt Academy", she doesn't have the excuse of being on the job. Though arguably that could have just been a case of desperation since cloudsdale could not join the Equestrian game.
