** The entire "Maverick" thing. The series' Maverick conflicts are often caused by viruses, but as for X1, X4, and X8, there's very little to suggest the rebellions were anything besides political. This is compounded severalfold by the fact that in the Zero series (same universe, just a century later), the heroic Resistance are branded as Mavericks by a tyrannical dystopia; it flips the script, and poses the "Mavericks" as good guys.

* CreatorsPet: It's no secret that Keiji Inafune's favorite character is Zero. Inafune designed him hoping for him to be the new Mega Man, only to instead decide to pass X to Hayato Kaji. He wanted Zero to be playable as early as X1, and he was the one who got Zero to come back in X2. His comments in the Official Complete Works book also indicate he was very protective of who got to do Zero's illustrations, doing them himself up until X4. Fans assume this is part of why he's such a SpotlightStealingSquad character for X in the series. Unfortunately, Inafune seemed to regret this and wanted to put X back into the spotlight with Maverick Hunter X, only for that series to never get a sequel.

** X is not Mega Man. He is his successor, like a "Mega Man Version 2" based on the original model. His sapience - his main difference from Mega Man - is such an important plot point that you'd think it'd be clear, but inaccurate journalism and promotional material hasn't helped with the misconception (even the English versions of X2 and X3 refer to him as Mega Man). Not even the English voice cast of X4 were aware that Mega Man and X were separate people, hence Ruth Shiraishi's identical performances in Mega Man 8 and X4.

** Furthermore, fans tend to conflate the personalities of the glitched Zero who fought Sigma in the past, and the Awakened Zero activated by the Zero Virus in X5. When Zero fought Sigma, he was still suffering from an abnormality that Dr. Wily never fixed before his passing, hoping his Maverick Virus would finish it for him; this made him psychotic and bloodthirsty. Contrarily, Awakened Zero is what Dr. Wily originally intended for Zero's personality: a cold-hearted, remorseless agent of destruction. While both relish in chaos, one was a glitch and the other was not, and they are entirely separate facets of Zero's personality.

** The term Reploid canonically stands for "Replica Android". While many assume this is in reference to them being replicas of X, this is never actually stated, and according to other media such as "Rockman X The Novel: Irregulars Report" the term is meant to refer to their replication of human-level cognition, or "replicas of humans". This would also answer the question on whether or not X and Zero can technically be considered reploids.

VideoGame/MegaManMaverickHunterX further fleshed out Vile's character but this reboot became a StillbornFranchise so we didn't get the chance to see Vile fleshed out further.

** X wasn't originally a member of the Maverick Hunters. The game manual states X was a lab aide to Dr. Cain for a long time, only to request to join Zero when Sigma's rebellion began. Only by the start of X2 is he a full-fledged Hunter hire. Of course, the intro to the ExcusePlot spin-off VideoGame/MegaManXtreme claims X was part of the Hunters before Sigma subdued Zero, and in the Maverick Hunter X continuity he is a Hunter at the start, so it's clear why this misconception is propagated.

A third camp places blame on both, saying that Light should have known not everyone would follow his safety standards and that Cain should have paid more attention to the amount of work Light put into X. It can be argued that neither are to blame- they both had their faults, but it wasn't until Sigma was infected by Zero that things went bad, and that wouldn't have happened if Sigma didn't screw around in their original fight, which gave Zero an opening. A 4th camp believe that while Light and Cain both had the best of intentions they either overlooked or underestimated certain variables that were completely beyond their ability to control ultimately resulting in a powder-keg primed to explode regardless of who, when, why, what, where, or how it was triggered.

* AngstWhatAngst:
** In X8, it is revealed that the New Generation reploids (and by extension, Axl himself) were built via the manipulations of Sigma, who considers them his children. This bothers Axl roughly a thousand times less than Zero's similar origin eats at him; in fact, he's the only one of the three not driven into a HeroicBSOD by this "BreakThemByTalking" done soon after. It helps that:
*** Sigma and Lumine don't press the point (when Axl outright asks Lumine whether Sigma's influence will affect his sanity, Lumine dismisses him), unlike what Sigma does with Zero.
*** Zero was having nightmare visions of a certain crazy, eyebrow-waggling old scientist even before Sigma started playing with his head.
*** Zero's history comes with a SuperpoweredEvilSide. Axl has no such problems.
** Axl has a lack of angst over being forced to kill his adopted father in X7. In his defense, Axl didn't really deal the killing blow. He just beat the guy in a fight. It was Red's decision to set the place to blow if he lost and to go down with it.
* AntiClimaxBoss:
** Dr. Doppler in X3. His attack pattern is almost insultingly easy, though his ability to absorb your attacks can make the fight seem harder than it is.
** Iris in X4. Compared to Double in X's route, Iris isn't terribly difficult. Justified as Iris was never meant to be a fighter and the project that spawned her and Colonel, spawned the two for a reason. They were originally one and the same reploid meant to replicate the paradox X had with tm, but Iris' innocence and pacifism doesn't go well with Colonel's spirit of combat and honorable nature, so they were SplitAtBirth.
** X in X5. You realize how inconvenient charge attacks are when they telegraph every move X makes as a boss. You'll also realize why it's important to move while charging.
** Zero in X5. Also like X, the battle isn't very spectacular because Zero's AI makes him spam his easily avoided (with some practice anyways, but you're certain to get some) Giga Attack over and over again. This results in a decidedly unspectacular battle.
** Sigma in his X6 form, especially since he's fought after Gate (and his goddamned laboratory). Subverted for his second form, however.
* AssPull: A rather infamous one in X6, where finding Zero in any stage's optional route has him tell X, "I hid myself while I repaired myself." Trope, however, in an overlooked scene if Zero finds one of the Armor Capsules, where he fully admits he doesn't know what happened and implies it was probably someone else. Not unlike Light himself stepping in to repair X at the end of X5.

** In X4, Mega Man X4 is the king of this due to poor English voice acting acting. It most infamously ruins what is supposed to be a legitimately affecting scene between Zero and Iris. ** Fighting Iris in the X Legacy Collection since, once she summons Colonel, X is basically fighting a Stand User.
* NarmCharm: Silly as Vile's tantrum's in Maverick Hunter X may be, the fact that he'd blow away potential comrades over a comment that was made in response to his own insults, or because he didn't like a guy's face is terrifying, and those cases are the few where he actually has any reason at all!

* OneSceneWonder: Again, the Green Biker Dude from X2.

* PlayerPunch:
** So the series finally allowed Zero to be fully playable? Iris dies. In fact, she was probably introduced into the story just to invoke the trope to Zero.
** Zero ends up being a major player punch when he kamikazes Vile in the first X game. And it also seems that X himself channels the player punch by breaking out of an electrocage, having his health refill and his weapons restored. Then it comes up again after defeating Vile with the conversation, and gift, that will gives X if he didn't get the buster upgrade. The Maverick Hunter X remake makes the scene hit even harder.

** While "disaster" might be too strong a term, the Legacy Collection versions of the games suffer from very noticeable input delay (with X1 having it the worst), and the Steam version launched with a bug that could to lead to significant framerate drops and slowdown (though this could be fixed with a simple tweak). Mind you, the games are still perfectly playable this way (this is still largely a PolishedPort), but compared to the original versions, the controls simply aren't as responsive or tight. In addition, just like the Legacy Collection for the Classic Series, the UsefulNotes/NintendoSwitch version only has the first four games on cartridge with the other four being included via a download code (unless you bought the Japan-exclusive 5-in-1 Box).

He also has a less annoying voice, a better personality, and a different playstyle that wasn't a weaker version of X's, making him a fun character to use (having infinite ammo for his special weapons helped).

** Rescuing hostages, especially in Mega Man X6 and X7. Not only do they possess important parts that are Content if you screw up, but rescuing them can be a LuckBasedMission at times as well.

However, there are two attacks that he modified; Avalanche Yeti's attack, which causes gigantic snowflakes that freeze you on contact to rain down, lasts a lot longer, and Lumine can still blast you with other attacks while it's in effect. Of course, the intro to the ExcusePlot spin-off Mega Man Xtreme claims X was part of the Hunters before Sigma subdued Zero, and in the Maverick Hunter X continuity he is a Hunter at the start, so it's clear why this misconception is propagated.
