* JerkassWoobie: Father Garai is a devoted priest and the long-suffering boyfriend of Michio Yuki. Garai initially refuses to turn in Michio to the authorities, believing it to breach his authority as a man of god, and assists Michio in committing many of his crimes, along with [[spoiler:raping Michio when he was young, which, along with the MW bioweapon, exacerbated Michio's transformation into TheSociopath.]] Despite this, Garai clearly regrets going along with Michio's schemes, eventually resolving to stop him, and is put through continuance abuse, ending with him [[spoiler:[[HeroicSacrifice killing himself]] in order to save the world from MW.]]

* {{Narm}}: Michio is supposed to be really evil, fair, but [[spoiler: Stuffing a guy's mouth full of cigarettes until he falls off a cliff and raping your dog]] is so terrible it's almost LaughablyEvil.

* SomeAnvilsNeedToBeDropped: Later on, a chapter is dedicated to how homosexuality is neither wrong nor shameful. Given how the only homosexual or bisexual characters in the story are Michio, [[CowardlyLion Garai]] and a cameo by a (principled and outspoken) lesbian editor (and an even briefer cameo by her lover), this was sorely needed.

** The MW gas. It obliterates an entire village, and even a tiny portion of it turned NiceGuy Michio Yuki into a CompleteMonster.

* ValuesResonance: while Michio is a DepravedBisexual, the depictions of most of the other LGBT characters are rather positive.

He was a perfectly nice kid before he was exposed to MW, not to mention being [[spoiler: raped by Garai in the process,]] and he suffers constant physical pain because of it. While this fails to excuse one inch of his depravity, it might make you feel an ounce of pity for him.
