Missy. She does nothing but complicate Jack's life, first with her wanting to date him, the pregnancy scare, and her inability to see anyone else's position, cares only about herself, and worst of all, detracts the plot away from Jack and Bobby's development into their adult selves.selves.
** Grace. Surrounds herself with sycophantic college students and tried to manipulate her son into being just another one of her followers. Neglects her kids so she can get high and tries to make her older son a ParentalSubstitute for her younger son. Got caught breaking a rule Hypocrite that she wrote and called everyone else sexist for trying to enforce said rule, even though she wasn’t punished at all. Publicly shamed an observant Muslim student for being religious. Blatantly employed all the usual victim-blaming tactics she always rails against when a friend of hers was accused of sexual misconduct. In the future, Bobby almost lost the election to IRejectYourReality maintain her lie about his father.

* RetroactiveRecognition: Oddly enough, of a character name. Robert [=McCallister=], moderate Republican...sound familiar? Rob Lowe's character on Series/BrothersAndSisters was given the same name and political ideology due to the show being made by the same creators, including producer Greg Berlanti, who never got to fully explore Bobby's political career due to Series/JackAndBobby being canceled. That being said, the Brothers and Sisters version of Bobby drops out of the presidential race. And also, he's running in the present day (i.e. the early 21st century) rather than the 2040's.

Not a trope

* JustForFun/XMeetsY: The show's premise is sort of like Series/Smallville meets Series/TheWestWing, two shows that were both quite popular when this show premiered.

* BrokenBase: The flash-forward scenes, some like them and think they make the show unique, while others hate them due to finding being too distracting from the main plots.

* HarsherInHindsight: Jack's track injury sidelines him for the season, and at first one is inclined to believe that usual teenage Wangst will be the only result...until the documentary from the future reveals that

too good to last cleanup

* ScrewedByTheNetwork: TheWB kept moving the show around the schedule--causing it to shed viewers--until finally dropping it off on Sunday nights, a dead zone for teen viewers. It also was hardly advertised at all compared to most of the networks other shows, and after winter break, there was NO advance warning of any new episodes airing, so unless you used an episode guide, you'd NEVER know the show was even still on. Also from the ads it looked like a typical WB teen drama, but the commercials didn't even hint at the story of Bobby being president in the future (being told through flashforwards) People looking for a teen drama were caught off guard by the political storyline, and those who didn't mind the politics didn't watch the show because it didn't look too different from every other teen drama on the network. In the end the show's unique premise was its undoing, maybe it would've lasted longer without the future storyline.
* TooGoodToLast: Canceled during its first season.
