** Ismael, Annie, and Sheriff Brackett are liked because they're among the few characters in the remake franchise who weren't complete assholes. Annie also gets bonus points for being played by Creator/DanielleHarris, who played Jamie Lloyd in the fourth and fifth movies; Brackett gets some points as well by being played by the same guy who plays [[Franchise/ChildsPlay Chucky]]. As for Ismael, well...it's Danny Trejo.

** Michael bursting through a car windshield is followed by Dr. Loomis shouting "MICHAEL! JESUS CHRIST! WHAT THE HELL!!!" as if he were reacting to someone spilling coffee on the floor. The line even became [[MemeticMutation a meme]] in the Dread Central podcast and forums, usually used whenever Creator/MalcolmMcDowell is mentioned.

** Michael's latex mask shouldn't have been ''that'' well after being stuck under the floorboards for 17 years. Sure, it realistically was shown as cracked and faded after being there for so long, but constant changes of the seasons would have melted it and/or turn it to dust. Plus, there's the question on '''HOW''' Michael managed to get it under the floorboards. He was only ten-years-old at that time.

* DarknessInducedAudienceApathy: Every character save for a few exceptions[[note]]Laurie (despite one or two obnoxious moments), Mr. and Mrs. Strode, Tommy Doyle, Lindsey Wallace, Dr. Loomis, Michael's school principal, the cemetery groundskeeper,and Mrs. Myers.[[/note]] is as violently unlikable as possible, and we barely see them (Creator/DannyTrejo's character is killed very early on). Without a single character to like, and with Michael having most of his CreepyAwesome stolen by the beginning in which we see how terrible his life is, why should we watch this movie?

* TheScrappy: Ronnie is supposed to be disliked for being an Abusive Parent, but he's ultimately disliked for being a one-dimensional asshole who torments his family ForTheEvulz, the fact that he comes off as more of an overgrown schoolyard bully than an actual abuser, as mentioned in Narm above, and for giving Michael a FreudianExcuse, despite what made Michael so terrifying in the original movies was that he had no reason for killing.

** Special mention goes to Deborah Myers, while she herself was a struggling stripper, the fact she came home to find her daughter and second husband dead, her son ''being the cause of it'', and watching the last of her family ([[spoiler: and Laurie as an infant]]) is devastating. Hits it ''big'' when [[spoiler: Michael kills Nurse Wynn when [[TemptingFate she insulted Michael's picture of Laurie and jokingly questioned if she was related him]]]]. The look on Deborah's face when she sees Michael ''snap at her'' and [[EvilAllAlong having that evil smirk on his face]] and her huge mental breakdown is ''devastating''. It's worse when you see her [[spoiler: later on watching video tapes of how happy her family before was and proceeds to [[DrivenToSuicide shoot herself]] after hitting the DespairEventHorizon '''hard''']].

** Michael's origin basically boils down to "he killed people because he had a bad childhood, then killed people because he liked it". It wasn't fleshed out much, and as a result they ruined the mystery of his character.
** The movie was [[WhatCouldHaveBeen originally going to have been]] a prequel/interquel centering around Michael's years in the asylum. Some felt that would have been more interesting than a straight-up remake.

While the film has problems, it's '''devastating''' to see a woman who tried to keep her family together lose it all because her son ''lost it'', and then live with the cold fact her kid is basically far from [[UsedToBeASweetKid the sweet little kid he was]]. Seeing her watching the good times with her family and Michael before killing herself and leaving Laurie alone is a heartbreaking but ''horrifying'' cataclysm that lead to the events of the film..]]
** The death of Ishmael, the only guard that treated Michael with humanity, is especially hard to watch due to both his cries of "I was good to you, Mikey!" And the absolutely brutal method of killing him with both drowning and crushing by television set.
** The alternate ending. Michael finally seems to regain a flicker of humanity and willingly releases Laurie to Loomis [[HeelFaceDoorSlam ...right before he is promptly gunned down by the police.]]
** When Laurie's parents are killed. They were so nice, but of course, this is a horror film, so they are made sympathetic so that we, the audience, feel bad when they die; and it works. It's worse for Mrs. Strode, her kill is dragged out and she's desperately crawling away after being stabbed off screen. Then, to twist the knife further, she realizes Michael's after Laurie and screams for him not to hurt her (wasn't his intentions at all, but still) and Michael just breaks her neck.
** Laurie and Sheriff Brackett's reactions upon finding Annie bleeding are this and NightmareFuel. Hell, [[AdultFear it's scarier for Brackett]].

* NightmareFuel:
** The death of Wesley Rhodes, the asshole who bullies Michael. Yes, he's a dick, but he's a kid. He's ambused, then beatened to death with a big branch, all while bleeding, crying, a begging Michael to stop. [[FridgeHorror And then you realize he probably has a parent waiting for him at home]]...
** Ronnie' s death. Sure, no one feels bad for him, but imagine being taped up, unable to call for help or move, then your throat is slit and you're stabbed repeatedly in the chest and face.
** Judith's death. She berates her brother for being creepy and ends up receiving a fucking knife in her stomach. It doesn't end there; she then goes out into the hallway, limping and screaming for help before Michael viciously stabs her several more times.
** When Michael attacks Annie. [[spoiler: Thankfully, she doesn't die, however what Michael does to her is really terrifying]]. She's getting freaky with Paul, until Michael stabs him, and after she fails to escape him is stabbed herself multiple times in the chest area and left bleeding and crying on the floor; [[FanDisservice and she's topless during all of this]]. What's worse is that this is Danielle Harris getting brutalized, who longtime ''Halloween'' fans know as the actress for Jamie Lloyd in ''Halloween 4'' and ''5'', making all this even more uncomfortable.
*** When Laurie finds Annie, she runs into the house to call 911. The minute she's out of the room, Michael emerges behind the open front door, ''having been standing there the whole time''. He slowly follows Laurie while Annie tries to warn her, but because of her injuries she can do nothing but tearfully scream Laurie's name.

** People poked fun at how the orderlies at Michael's asylum fed him steroids due to how tall he got. This gets even funnier when in the sequel, Daeg Faerch (the actor who played Michael as a child) was unable to reprise his role because of a massive growth spurt he had between films.
** In the first scene, Michael's stepfather, Ronnie, makes a rather crude 'joke' about how Michael will probably grow up to be transgender - "Prob'ly cut his dick an' balls off an' change his name to Michelle." A year later, Faerch appeared in ''{{Film/Hancock}}'', in which he played a French bully called Michel, which is pronounced the same way as 'Michelle'.

** One of the biggest issues of the film is that the first 1/3rd of the movie makes Michael both overly sympathetic and annoying (despite his multiple murders), making hard to not picture the whiny, overweight kid even when Michael is a violent, hulking monster as an adult.

* ToughActToFollow: Creator/MalcolmMcDowell's portrayal of Dr. Loomis.
** In his review, Phelous criticized that one of the things he didn't like about this version of Loomis was that in the beginning it seemed that he was [[{{Demonization}} describing Michael as being a lot worse that he actually was (at that point).]]

* ComicallyMissingThePoint: Meta example. The original works so well in part due to no background being given onto why Michael is the way he is. This movie spends a third of its run time showing you his generically bad childhood, including a stripper for a mom and a mean step-father.
** Made even worse by Rob Zombie's public admiration for John Carpenter's original. Not only did he explain Michael's childhood background and give him FreudianExcuse for his killings, but he also entirely abandoned the long tracking/crane shots so synonymous with Carpenter/Cundey in favor of constant quick cuts and shaky camera shots.

* EnsembleDarkhorse: Joe Grizzly. He's a OneSceneWonder played by Ken Foree who was badass enough to give Michael a small challenge before killing him.

** As pointed out during the review of the film by Phelous, the merits of giving Michael an origin and explaining his murderous nature is dubious at best (and has been done [[Film/HalloweenTheCurseOfMichaelMyers poorly before]]), but it is difficult to take Michael as a child seriously with the tantrum-esque '''"I'M NOT LISTENING!! *SCREECHES LOUDLY*"''' moment, to say nothing of how this can make it difficult to take this version of Michael seriously as an adult killer.
