* AwardSnub: Goodfellas, Scorsese, and Braco lost to ''DancesWithWolves'', KevinCostner, and Whoopi Goldberg for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress, respectively. In hindsight, ''Goodfellas'' is considered Scorsese's MagnumOpus. On the other hand, Joe Pesci not only got a fully deserved Oscar for Best Supporting, he didn't even expect to win and gave one of the shortest and most modest speeches in Academy history ("This is a great privilege. Thank you.")

** Also snubbed was Thelma Schoonmaker for Best Editing. The fast-pace editing of ''Goodfellas'' was controversial at the time but in hindsight it's considered one of the most expertly edited films of the last 30 years.

This is not explicit or implicit in the book nor in the movie.

** There is also the horrific possibility of what his home life growing up must have been like that could have led him to become what he is.

** This might be intentional to keep him from being too much of a KarmaHoudini- the punishment seems light to everyone else, but it's torture for him. Compare his misery of living life as an "average nobody" to when he was in prison as a wiseguy and eating like a king every night.

* FridgeHorror: If you pay attention to the personality of Tommy, is pure FridgeHorror. He is incredibly irrational and paranoid, and any word misunderstood by himself can lead to murder. So here, it is very likely already committed other killings or beatings before the movie. Worse still, can you imagine how he must have been in school?

* CompleteMonster: [[BigBad Jimmy Conway]], who is a longtime associate of the mafia. While at the beginning of the film, he seems to be AffablyEvil, BUT subsequent events show that really [[FauxAffablyEvil is the opposite.]] He's really an arrogant, paranoid and greedy bastard who just wants money for himself. He crosses the MoralEventHorizon when he has his conspirators in the heist murdered rather than share money with them. He has not qualms about killing, in fact, he even helped Tommy to beat Billy Bats. He also underwent a man about to be eaten by a lion. At least Tommy has "excuses" for its atrocities, while Jimmy is an associate in the mafia just ForTheEvulz.

* CompleteMonster: Tommy. He excels in the film as the most insane and sadistic mobster. His series of crimes throughout the film, are unparalleled and gets several KickTheDog moments. In fact, he goes so far that kills a mafia member, simply because he remembered his old trade of bootblack. Not surprisingly, only because of the ease with which anyone kills, but also by how merciless with their victims. He is really a kind of fear even for their own partners, who know that a word misunderstood by the sadistic criminal can lead to tragedy. A scene that describes his psychotic personality is when, at a dinner with his mother, she teaches him a painting and he answered, "Why are the two dogs look out for one side?". It seems he can never see things from a standard prism, his twisted personality makes him see strange things, ''even in an innocent painting''. He is the exact opposite of Luca Brasi in The Godfather, who is represented almost inhuman and emotionless, Tommy is incredibly alive.
