** Many fans began speculating that the new purple-haired character (Later revealed to be Shez) fighting Female Byleth in the trailer is in fact an alternate version of Male Byleth. This is due to the character wielding an unknown Hero's Relic that seemingly has no Crest Stone, his clothes and hair looking similar to Jeralt's, and with the box art showing them together with Sothis and what appears to be a counterpart to her in the background. Not to mention the fact that on the ''Three Houses'' box art, it has Female Byleth on the left and Male Byleth on the right, which may add fuel to the fire. At the same time, however, other people believe it's a mere coincidence, and that these similarities are a result of the character being Byleth's [[EvilCounterpart Evil]] ([[GreyAndGrayMorality ?]]) [[EvilCounterpart Counterpart]]. The second trailer, however, reveals that Shez is the PlayerCharacter of ''Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes'' and Byleth is an antagonist of some sort in this game.

** Sothis' narration, timed with a scene that looks like it takes place at the point where Jeralt dies, and the reveal art showing a figure positioned as something of an opposite to Sothis, quickly caused speculation that part of the games narrative involves Byleth attempting to undo past events like Jeralt dying, only for the mysterious pink haired man to intervene to try to stop them. In particular, this has lead to numerous guesses that Jeralt will be playable as a result.

This isn't helped by the release of the game's box art having only Female Byleth. * MemeticLoser: Male Byleth not getting featured in the premiere trailer or the box art of the game had the side-effect of this. Female Byleth was considered by many to be the more popular of the two sometime after ''VideoGame/FireEmblemThreeHouses'''s release, in part due to the franchise's LGBTFanbase and the fact that she could romance all three main lords. As such, the spinoff game using her as the default choice has made some people think of her as "the canon version" of the character, making it feel like it is only twisting the knife further.

* MemeticLoser: Male Byleth not getting featured in the premiere trailer or the boxart of the game had the side-effect of this. Female Byleth was already considered by many to be the more popular of the two at the time of ''VideoGame/FireEmblemThreeHouses'' sometime after ''VideoGame/FireEmblemThreeHouses'''s release, bolstered by both her design, in part due to the franchises' LGBTFanbase, franchise's LGBTFanbase and the fact that she could actually romance all three main lords. So As such, the spinoff game using her as the default choice feels had made people consider her "the canon version" of the two, making it feel like it is only twisting the knife further.

Grammar fix.

** The fact that this game ''exclusively'' focuses on characters from ''Three Houses'' instead of characters from several different entries like the previous game also resulted in this, especially after how much the previous game was criticized for having it's roster focus too much on the casts from ''Awakening'' and ''Fates'' to the detriment of the older games. It doesn't help that one of the reasons given for excluding characters like Ike and Roy in the previous game was so they could save them for a sequel, which this game completely contradicts.
