It ALMOST gets there... with reviewers pointing out the animation and visuals were of ''just'' high enough quality to draw attention to the fact that it wasn't ''quite'' as high quality as the show, in addition to lacking many of the background effects that MLP employs, thereby producing this effect on a meta level.

The fact that the [[spoiler: crossover aspect]] was a completely unexpected plot twist also didn't help.

Needless to say, when it turned out to be ReferenceOverdosed and [[spoiler: be roughly one third PowerpuffGirls crossover]], a lot of people who had expected something more true to the original show didn't respond positively.
* NightmareFuel: [[spoiler: The destruction of Ponyville. It feels genuinely devastating and there is barely any jokes to lighten the mood. You're almost glad its not treated as such a big deal when Rainbow gets back.]]
