* NightmareFuel: [[spoiler:The destruction of Ponyville. It feels genuinely devastating and there are barely any jokes to lighten the mood. You're almost glad its not treated as such a big deal when Rainbow gets back.]]

** People have also criticized the Scootachicken joke, as it came without context, is focused on too long to be a FunnyBackgroundEvent, and ultimately is a huge non-sequiter for anyone who doesn't understand the joke--exactly how ''not'' to handle a reference.

* VisualEffectsOfAwesome: While the animation is generally considered one of the strongest aspects, the Double Rainboom in particular has been singled out as some beautiful animation.

Added DiffLines:

* HarsherInHindsight: The whole sequence where [[spoiler: Rainbow Dash floats through the void from ''Creator/TheHub'' universes to the ''Creator/CartoonNetwork'' universes is this now that ''Creator/TheHub'' was cut short when ''Creator/{{Discovery}}'' wanted one of their channels back, especially because a lot of the shows used to represent ''Creator/TheHub'' universes ended up being CutShort because of it...]]

* HypeBacklash: The whole project was initially pitched and hyped as a "fan-made episode" that aimed to [[OriginalFlavor capture the feeling of the original show as accurately as possible]] and have a professional quality level. Needless to say, when it turned out to be ReferenceOverdosed and [[spoiler:roughly one third PowerpuffGirls crossover]], a lot of people who had expected something more true to the original show didn't respond positively.

** Not to mention that some people [[spoiler:who ''liked'' the PowerpuffGirls section felt that the crew should have just made the episode a straight PPG/MLP crossover from the get-go rather than wasting the PPG material on a handful of gags with little plot relevance.]]

* UncannyValley: Of a sort. The film was advertised as having "show-quality animation. It ALMOST gets there... with reviewers pointing out the animation and visuals were of high enough quality to draw attention to the fact that it wasn't quite ''as'' high quality as the show, in addition to lacking many of the background effects that MLP employs, thereby producing this effect on a meta level.

* AlternateAesopInterpretation: While the official moral is "Stealing is wrong", the general consensus is that a much stronger (and less [[CaptainObviousAesop blatantly obvious]]) is "Think about the consequences before you act." Granted, the second one does come up in the same letter, but it's still a little awkward.

** The opening shot of the episode is a solid 30 second long shot of Twilight mixing potion ingredients while making random facial expressions. It goes on for so long that it starts to feel like an OverlyLongGag, except there's no gag. It's just Twilight sitting and mixing ingredients. The reason for this is it was originally a promo to show off their production values, which they then just decided to leave in the episode unaltered.

** Zachary Rich has stated since the film's release that while he might have started with the intentions of making the short "accurate to the show", he quickly realized that this could potentially make the effort underwhelming in contrast to the actual show, thus hitting on [[spoiler:the crossover concept that would be more a tribute to Faust]] early on.
